Location: The preferred location for this position is in any one of our Asia-Pacific geographies such as Australia, New Zealand, Papua New Guinea, Solomon Islands and Hong Kong. We are open to location for the right candidate.
Status: Permanent full-time, Monday to Friday
Salary Range: AUD $121,400 per annum to AUD $ 158,400 per annum (commensurate with skills and experience), plus 9.5% superannuation, plus benefits.

As the Finance Manager, Asia Pacific Region, you will support the Director of Finance and Operations, Asia Pacific Region, by providing highly specialised services in financial analysis and reporting; regional budget coordination; financial management; multi-country grants administration; accounting; management controls and reporting; and other financial activities to the Asia Pacific region with a focus on Papua New Guinea and Solomon Islands (“Melanesia”), New Zealand, and Australia. You will provide sophisticated strategic and analytical frameworks to design and implement financial models that will create further efficiencies in data management and decision-making. You will administer and maintain finance / accounting activities in accordance with TNC policies and procedures and best practices in financial/organisational management. You will also provide assistance and training/coaching in finance and accounting to the Finance teams. You should be as comfortable analysing numbers, spreadsheets, and formulas, as interacting with team members across the organisation to support the growth and development of the organisation. Your duties are highly confidential and require broad and comprehensive knowledge of TNC’s policies.
Responsibilities & Scope
Financial Management, Reporting & Analysis
- Under the supervision of the Director of Finance & Operations (DFO) – Asia Pacific Region, project-manage the full budget life cycle of Melanesia and support the Business Units (BU) DFOs.
- Duties include supporting the country DFOs in the development of the annual budget, mid-year forecasting, and year-end closing for New Zealand and Australia.
- Anticipated time allocation: 45% Melanesia, 30% Asia Pacific Region 20% New Zealand, 5% Australia, but may change due to needs.
- Work with the Melanesia, New Zealand, and Australia Leadership Team and Finance Directors to evaluate financial results and develop corrective strategies as needed.
- Partner with country program Finance Directors to design and develop three- to five-year forecast models related to revenues and expenses to enhance data management and decision-making.
- Prepare regular financial reports for internal and external audiences (e.g. Asia Pacific Council, funders, TNC management at all operational levels).
- Responsible for working with BUs to help align funding opportunities with needs and identifying potential gaps.
- Review and advise on budgets for project proposals and identify potential risks.
- Collaborate with the Regional Development team to manage and track fundraising activities.
- Cultivate and curate rapport between teams to ensure that Development and Finance are closely aligned in their workflow and projects.
- Develop interactive web-based tools and systems to access financial data and processes in an easy and digestible manner.
- Provide backup support to various country program units in the Asia Pacific region.
- Manage ad-hoc projects to address key financial issues.
- May provide financial management and reporting support for cross-boundary projects and/or other business units as assigned.
- May provide assistance to Finance Directors for reconciliation and recording of local country books into TNC’s consolidated financial system and intercompany transactions
General Finance/Accounting and Operations
- Provide assistance to staff on complex staff/management questions and problems based on advanced knowledge of finances and accounting.
- Supervise in country personnel and work with other regional staff to oversee and/or directly perform general accounting duties for the Melanesia Business Unit, including journal entries, loans, accruals, deferred revenue, and expense corrections.
- Oversee, manage, process, etc. cross-entity financial transactions.
- Perform forensic research on, and analysis of, TNC’s financial data and provide corrective measures.
- Review and monitor income statement and balance sheet items at month and year-end close.
- Ensure programmatic commitments, TNC policies and procedures, financial standards, and legal requirements are met and managed for compliance.
- Reinforce consistency in the organisation's policies and procedures and provide support related to the relevant field.
- Provide guidance and assistance to Business Unit leads on financial audits.
- Train Asia Pacific Region finance staff on new tools, systems, and processes.
- Travel occasionally and, on short notice, as needed.
- Work an extended and flexible hour as needed.
- Perform other duties as assigned.
- This position does not currently manage staff at this time but may do so in the future.
A LITTLE ABOUT YOU
To be successful in the role you will have:
- Bachelor's Degree in Finance, Accounting, Business Administration and 5 years' related experience or equivalent combination.
- Experience developing and implementing complex projects and strategic initiatives in an unstructured and matrixed environment.
- Experience in manipulating, analysing and interpreting data.
- Expertise in Microsoft Excel.
- Experience in financial analysis and budgeting.
- Experience with Local GAAP (Generally Accepted Accounting Principles).
- Experience using accounting and financial reporting systems.
- Excellent verbal and written communication skills.
- Fluency in English.
- Cross-cultural experience and management are appreciated.
- Fluency in one or more languages of the Asia Pacific region.
- Experience monitoring for and ensuring compliance with organisational policy, applicable law and regulation, and finance/accounting/management best practice.
- Technical expertise on complex accounting/financial issues. Advanced Expertise in Microsoft Excel.
- Excellent analytical and quantitative skills.
- Experience in managing audits.
- Non-profit accounting experience preferred.
- Experience serving as a resource to others to solve problems.
- Strong organisational skills and attention to detail.
- Ability to resolve complex issues independently within program area.
- Technical experience with grants award accounting issues.
- Expert knowledge of GAAP and/or relevant regulatory framework. US GAAP knowledge is preferred.
- Professional certification such as a CPA (Accounting License), MBA, CIA or similar country program certification.
- Experience working in or with Melanesia is desired.
