About the role

A great opportunity exists for a Research Assistant to join the Sax Institute. Working with both ARDAC (Antecedents of Renal Disease in Aboriginal Children) and SEARCH (Study of Environment on Aboriginal Resilience and Child Health) study teams, this role will work with clinical researchers and educators to identify the occurrence of early markers of kidney disease in Aboriginal and non-Aboriginal young people across NSW.

Although no two days will be the same, while working in this role you will get the opportunity to:

  • Undertake research activities including running Yarning sessions, conducting health education sessions and liaising with Aboriginal communities to develop strategies to prevent, diagnose and manage chronic kidney disease
  • Coordinate the development and submission of research publications
  • Provide research administrative support for the ARDAC Study
  • Build relationships and managing communications with stakeholders
  • Ensure that ethics guidelines, standards and WHS requirements are met

About you – Selection Criteria

We are looking for a motivated and switched-on Research Assistant to fill this position who has the following experience and current skill set:

  • Degree in health, public health, or other related field; or Certificate or Diploma in health, public health, or other related field, with appropriate relevant experience
  • Demonstrated ability and experience in engaging with Aboriginal people and communities, and an understanding and sensitivity to Aboriginal culture and issues affecting Aboriginal people.
  • Experience within public health, Aboriginal health research, medical research, or health care environments
  • Willingness to learn about kidney disease and public health research, education, implementation, and evaluation.
  • Ability to work both independently and as part of a small team, taking initiative and exercising sound judgement in resolving matters that may arise as part of normal daily work.
  • Ability to spend periods of up to 4 - 6 times per year in rural and regional NSW.
  • Demonstrated effectiveness in communication (face to face, telephone and email).
  • Demonstrated organisational and time management skills with attention to detail.
  • Identify as Aboriginal and/or Torres Strait Islander.
  • Current NSW driver’s license.
  • Current Working with Children Check.

The successful candidate will be appointed through The Sax Institute and will have close working relationships with the Centre for Kidney Research at The Children’s Hospital at Westmead (Sydney) and Flinders University (Adelaide).
