Our partnership with Hume via the Youth Support Worker will provide support services, learning opportunities, life-skills and creative development for young people and their families so they can develop the resilience to break the cycle of poverty and disadvantage. To ensure the smooth operation of our service we require a passionate professional person to help the team function effectively.

About this role

As a Youth Support Worker you will wear a number of hats to ensure youth/young people feel safe, supported and enjoy opportunities for belonging, creative expression and healthy bodies and minds. You will:

  • Work closely with our partner HUME COMMUNITY HOUSING in an engagement strategy project, working with youth in the community, as well as a youth project officer to develop a program suited for Youth within in the Hunter region.
  • Have the ability to develop appropriate programs/solutions, such as creating and facilitating groups.
  • Be interested in developing and facilitating groups in community based environments
  • Experience creating and completing group work evaluations to collect data for program effectiveness and success. Evaluate the effectiveness of the solutions in addressing these needs
  • Excellent communication skills working with young people, their families and the community (verbal and nonverbal skills)
  • Facilitate youth focused educational, health and wellbeing programs which provide critical support during time of transition be it school or life transitions or transiting from the juvenile justice system
  • Identify unaddressed needs of youth and the community, develop approach programs and evaluate their effectiveness in address these needs
  • Creating admin structure and frameworks; recording data
  • Demonstrated experience and being comfortable working with young people (aged 12-17 years) one on one.
  • Have an awareness and understanding of the factors that impact young people, include social, emotional, societal and community influences
  • Have experience working with communities; researching and developing an understanding of current needs and how to work in partnership with other agencies (formal/informal)
  • Build partnerships with local primary and high schools and other stakeholders in the community

About You and What you need to succeed?

You will have a qualifications in youth work (or related discipline), or 5 years related working experience and:

  • Experience in the Community Services or Education working with vulnerable and at-risk youth/young people exposure to juvenile justice an advantage but not essential
  • You will have experience in a similar position supporting the effective running of a program and group work
  • Experience leading a program/project from design to implementation to evaluation
  • Ability to facilitate youth educational and health and wellbeing programs
  • Community engagement experience; the ability to identify and effectively support the development of partnerships
  • Collaborative approach with the ability to effectively manage interruptions while meeting deadlines
