Occupational Therapist

The Benevolent Society

Are you passionate about the impact early intervention can have in children’s lives?

As the Partner in the Community for the NDIA’s Early Childhood Early Intervention (ECEI) service across Logan/ Beenleigh/ Redlands, Brisbane and the Moreton Bay region (Caboolture/ Strathpine), The Benevolent Society is excited to be recruiting an additional Occupational Therapist to the team.

Terms: Full-time position based in Brisbane, Logan or Caboolture.

The Opportunity:

The ECEI approach supports families to help children, aged 0-6 who have a developmental delay or disability, to develop the skills they need to take part in daily activities and achieve the best possible outcomes throughout their life. The Benevolent Society’s ECEI teams will provide a family centred approach that supports greater inclusion in mainstream settings and builds the capacity of a child and their family.

You will work within a trans-disciplinary team to meet with families and gather information on their child’s development, and the parents’ goals for their child. You will then use the information you have gathered, as well as any other available information such as Allied Health assessments & Paediatrician letters, to craft a report that details the pathway/s of support you are recommending for the child with consideration of Early Childhood best practice guidelines.

You will report to a Team Leader and work alongside other professionals, such as Speech Pathologists, Physiotherapists, Occupational Therapists and Early Childhood Teachers, to determine the best pathway for children with a development delay and/or disability and their families, which may include seeking to gain access to the NDIS.

The Work

Report writing will make up about 50% of your work, so being a good written communicator, enjoying writing reports and being very comfortable using technology are essential for enjoying this role.

Having an aptitude for interpretation of legislation will also be very helpful to you in this role – but don’t worry, we have Senior Practitioners who can support you to interpret and apply the legislation. A portion of your week will be spent travelling to and meeting with families – so enjoying variety, interacting with different people and getting out and about is also important. A large component of your week will also be office based work.

As well as the important pathway determination process, you will also have the opportunity to deliver short to medium term therapeutic interventions in both individual and group settings. Alongside other professionals, you will work collaboratively to undertake assessments, identify strengths, promote positive family relationships, and develop individualised client plans.

As an evolving scheme, the NDIS environment can be quite dynamic, so an openness and resilience to change will set you up for success in this role.

These roles represent a unique opportunity to have a genuine impact on the lives of the children and families you will work with.

Your experience:

  • Degree in Occupational therapy
  • Eligibility for membership as a Occupational Therapist with the Australian Health Practitioners Regulations Agency (AHPRA)
  • Previous experience working with children, young people and parents/care givers where the children and/or young people have complex needs
  • Good understanding of early intervention principles and experience of applying these in group settings.
  • Experience working with and supporting vulnerable children and their families to realise positive change and developing individual early intervention plans in consultation with them.
  • Great written communication skills and an aptitude for report writing
  • Great interpersonal communication skills and the ability to quickly develop rapport with children and their families.
  • Excellent time management skills
  • Ability to appropriately respond to the needs of people of all abilities and cultural backgrounds
  • Work within a client centric approach while maintaining a positive mindset
  • Ability to work as part of a multidisciplinary team and connect to peers using technology
  • An aptitude for developing an understanding of NDIS legislation
  • A current driver’s license and eligibility for a Blue Card
