Party Manager

  • Hours: 0.8 FTE with frequent evening and weekend work
  • Salary: $90,449 per annum (pro rata) plus 9.5% superannuation
  • Status & Term: Twelve months fixed term with the possibility of extension beyond that date
  • Location: Hobart office of the Tasmanian Greens with some Tasmanian and interstate travel
  • Accountability: Reports to State Executive via the State Convenor as line manager
  • Probation Period: Three months with the option to extend for another three months

Role

The Party Manager is the most senior staff member of the Tasmanian Greens and is responsible for managing the programs and the operations of the party. The Party Manager provides support and advice to State Executive and other party governance bodies and manages the implementation of the party’s decisions, strategies, campaigns and procedures.

The Party Manager supervises other paid staff. The number of paid staff varies between two and ten, depending on election campaign cycles. The Party Manager also co-ordinates the activities of some party volunteers. The Party Manager is responsible for ensuring the party provides a safe, healthy and welcoming environment for staff and volunteers.

The Party Manager manages the party’s financial, accommodation, information, technology and other resources in accordance with agreed strategies, policies and budgets.

The Party Manager liaises with the party’s elected representatives (federal, state and local) and their offices. The Party Manager also liaises with the national office and the other constituent parties of the Australian Greens.

Core Responsibilities

The core responsibilities of the Party Manager are to manage and to improve:

  1. The planning and readiness for the party’s election campaigns
  2. The party’s fund-raising strategy, including the development of an ongoing and sustainable fund-raising model
  3. The attraction and active engagement of members and supporters in party processes and campaigns
  4. The strategies and processes for communicating the party’s narratives, and
  5. The effective governance and administration of the party, including data integrity and financial sustainability.

The Party Manager contributes to and supports the party’s improvement planning process which establishes plans and targets in each of these five areas. The Party Manager works to implement agreed plans that are developed through that process.

Selection Criteria

The Party Manager must have:

  1. A commitment to the Greens charter and policies
  2. Strong leadership and management skills including effective program and proven project management skills
  3. Well-developed organisational, strategic and analytical skills, including the proven ability to prioritise and manage variable workloads, using initiative and judgement to achieve outcomes
  4. Demonstrated experience engaging, enabling and coordinating volunteers to achieve program and project outcomes as part of a team
  5. Highly regarded communication and interpersonal skills with proven ability to effectively liaise, consult, negotiate and work with a broad range of people within and beyond the party
  6. Proven ability to manage information in accordance with the Australian Privacy Principles and familiarity with the Australian Greens data management systems, or the ability and willingness to quickly acquire these skills
  7. Sound financial management skills, including proven ability to develop and maintain project budgets, comply with internal accounting procedures and accurately interpret financial reports
  8. Experience managing people, including exercising line management responsibilities, and
  9. An understanding of, and an ability to work within, the political environment.
