About the Department

St Vincent's Correctional Health Service (SVCHS) at Port Phillip Prison (PPP) provides primary health and mental health and secondary medical health care to prisoners at Port Phillip Prison, Laverton. Port Phillip Prison is a maximum security male prison accommodating approximately 1107 inmates and is situated 20 km West of Melbourne. SVCHS works collaboratively with Forensic Mental Health Services (FMHS) who provides secondary outpatient and inpatient care for those prisoners with a mental illness.The Psychiatric Nurse will work within primary psychiatric services at Port Phillip Prison. SCVHS are responsible for the provision of all primary care and referrals to FMHS for secondary mental health services

About the Role

You are to act as a role mode, demonstrating leadership skills under the guidance of the Primary Mental Health Clinical Coordinator and Manager of St Vincent's Correctional Health Service to deliver high quality, evidence based care through clinical practice and education.

Classifications for this position will range from NP75 to NP77 ($98,800 - $109,200 per annum pro rata).

Duties

  • Provide leadership for professional practice and contribute to the development of an annual education plan for psychiatric nursing staff
  • Assess the need and develop evaluation of nursing activity within a designated clinical area
  • Review audit systems and processes and develop continuous improvement projects in collaboration with the Primary Mental Health Clinical Coordinator
  • Coordinate induction/orientation of new psychiatric nursing staff in collaboration with Primary mental health clinical coordinator
  • Provide ongoing support and guidance to ensure psychiatric nurses comply in accordance with documentation requirements within a clinical record
  • Assist the Primary Mental Health Clinical Coordinator to conduct annual reviews and ensure mandatory training is completed by psychiatric nursing staff

Qualifications, Skills and Experience

  • Current registration with AHPTA
  • Post graduate qualification in mental health nursing
  • Bachelor of nursing or equivalent
  • Postgraduate qualification in education or clinical practice equivalent; or certificate IV in assessment and work place training, or currently undertaking
  • Experience in clinical teaching or project implementation
  • Experience in facilitating educational programs
  • Demonstrated ability to facilitate team outcomes
