About the Role

These resident doctor positions are aimed at HMOs who are considering Anaesthesia as a career. The positions involve 6 months anaesthesia and 6 months in other critical care rotations in intensive care and/or emergency medicine. The rotation through Anaesthesia will be in either term 1 or term 2 to enable you to gain experience and suitable referees should you plan on applying for the training program. Residents provide anaesthesia under supervision for our patients and work 38 hours per week for elective surgery. There are requirements to do 1 weekend of day shifts every 4-6 weeks.

The Department of Anaesthesia & Acute Pain Medicine has over 90 medical staff including full time and visiting consultant anaesthetists, anaesthetic trainees and HMOs. In addition we have 2 pain nurses, 5 research staff, biomedical technicians, and secretarial staff.

We perform about 12,000 anaesthetics per year covering all the surgical specialties except for paediatrics and obstetrics. We have a registrar rotation to the Royal Victorian Eye and Ear Hospital where experience in these areas can be obtained. HMO rotations include the Werribee Mercy Hospital.

There are over 450 open heart surgery cases, more than 900 neurosurgical cases, 400 thoracic cases and many other major surgical procedures, including major orthopaedics, carried out each year. We have a strong commitment to regional anaesthesia and analgesia with over 25% of our cases being carried out under this form of anaesthesia. Most major regional blocks techniques are performed. We are leaders in the use of ultrasound for regional anaesthesia and intraoperative echocardiography.

There is an excellent teaching programme with a weekly tutorial program for registrars and a weekly continuing education meeting for all staff. This programme has resulted in a 95% pass rate by our trainees at the final FANZCA exam at their first attempt.

We have an anaesthetic simulator on site which our staff and trainees to use to improve their management of anaesthetic emergencies. There has always been a strong incentive for clinical research resulting in multiple publications per year and engagement in multi-centre trials.

Join us. Your reward is career potential with opportunities for training and development in a values based organisation. Benefits include salary packaging, employee assistance program and Staff health centre.

All appointments are made subject to the candidate providing a current satisfactory National Police Certificate conducted by The Victoria Police.
