Position Summary:

A vacancy exists in the above unit for a highly motivated Aboriginal Health Worker (AHW) - to engage with clients who are homeless or are at risk of homelessness that present to the After Hours Primary Health Care (AHPHC) service. Working within a strengths-based framework, this position will assist clients of the AHPHC service to develop a dialogue between mainstream primary health and welfare services. The AHW is responsible for providing support to those Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander clients who present with health related issues to the AHPHC service. The AHW will work directly with the Nurse Practitioner/Clinical Nurse Consultant in an outreach capacity. The AHW will act as a resource for staff working in the AHPHC service to ensure culturally respectful and safe care will be provided to Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander clients who are homeless or at risk of homelessness. The AHW will advocate on behalf of clients accessing the AHPHC service with external stakeholders to assist with client access to mainstream health services. The AHW will assist in the development, implementation and evaluation of health promotion and health education initiatives undertaken by the AHPHC service.

The position is part-time, working in the afternoons during weekdays and on a Saturday and Sunday. Maximum Term until 30/06/2020 with the possibility of extending the contract. This position will be classified as a Aboriginal Health Education Officer (Graduate) - under The Named NSW (Non-Declared) Affiliated Health Organisations' Professional & Associated Staff Agreement 2009.

Selection Criteria

  • Personal integrity and demonstrated commitment to the Philosophy, Mission and Values of Mary Aikenhead Ministries and St Vincent's Health Australia.
  • Must be of Aboriginal and/or Torres Strait Islander descent (NB applicant's race is a genuine occupational qualification and is authorised by Section 14 of the Anti-Discrimination Act 1977, NSW).
  • Demonstrated understanding and sensitivity to Aboriginal culture and the issues affecting Aboriginal people and demonstrated understanding of their primary health and welfare needs.
  • Demonstrated ability and experience in engaging with Aboriginal people and communities, especially within the inner city of Sydney catchment and an interest in Homelessness, Mental Health, Drug and Alcohol and/or Chronic Disease management.
  • Well-developed written and verbal communication skills - including advocacy, liaison (internal and external) negotiation, and computer literacy.
  • Ability to manage and operate independently within a team framework, including effective organisational and time management skills.
  • Current Drivers Licence.
