Services provided include disability justice and discrimination advocacy, tenant advocacy, welfare rights and legal advice.

About the Role 

Sussex Street Community Law Service provides Individual Disability Advocacy Services (IDAS) throughout Western Australia and currently has a vacancy for an Individual Disability Advocate with a focus on supporting clients with NDIS appeals.

The position seeks to uphold the rights and interests of people with disabilities who are experiencing or likely to experience discrimination, abuse or neglect related to their disability. The role is to assist people with disability for a specific issue and support them to make informed decisions about those issues. 

The right person for this role will have the following profile:

  • Experience in non-legal advocacy for people with disability.
  • Existing relationships or a desire to build relationships with referral partners.

In this role you will have the opportunity to apply your skills and talents in the following ways:

COMMUNITY INFORMATION AND ADVOCACY 

  • Advocate and negotiate on behalf of clients. 
  • Provide face to face assistance to clients or by alternative methods as appropriate. 
  • Support clients to self-advocate as appropriate.
  • Provide clients with referrals to other relevant agencies and services. 

COMMUNITY RELATIONSHIPS

  • Develop and maintain relationships with external stakeholders to inform and promote the service.
  • Participate in community education activities as required. 

ADMINISTRATION

  • Maintain client records and statistical data.
  • Provide accountability documentation, including reports, as required.
  • Prepare reports as required for management and funding bodies.

OTHER DUTIES AS REQUIRED

  • Participation in organisational activities.
  • Participate in program development as required.
  • Participate in IDAS meetings.
  • Engage in SSCLS professional supervision. 

ESSENTIAL TO THE ROLE

Credentials

  1. Qualifications in social sciences, human services and /or relevant experience.
  2. Demonstrated commitment to human rights and social justice.
  3. Be eligible to obtain a clear national police record check.

Experience

  1. Previous experience in the provision of services for people with disabilities. 
  2. Previous experience in the provision of advocacy services. 
  3. Previous experience supporting people in the National Disability Insurance Scheme (NDIS)
  4. Demonstrated networking experience.

Knowledge and Skills

  1. Excellent written and oral communication skills. 
  2. Highly developed organisational and administrative skills. 
  3. Competent in the use of personal computers and ability to process required documentation.
  4. Ability to work independently and as a member of a team.

DESIRABLE TO THE ROLE

  1. Previous experience in working with Aboriginal and CALD clients and agencies. 
  2. Previous experience in the provision of individual advocacy services for people with disabilities.

SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS

This position will be based in Victoria Park and is directly supported by the IDAS Team Leader. 

A Driver's License is desirable as travel in and around the Perth Metro region is likely.
