About UpSkill

NDIS support coordinators and allied health professionals are among the most critical professionals assisting people with complex disability support needs to achieve positive outcomes under the NDIS.

The UpSkill program, designed by the Summer Foundation, is focused on building the capability of NDIS support coordinators and allied health professionals. UpSkill develops the capability of this workforce to assist people with complex needs to avoid admission to residential aged care (RAC) and to build their capacity to leave RAC to live in the community.

People with complex disability require access to a support coordinator and allied health workforce that has specialist expertise in:

  • Housing and support models that provide an alternative to RAC.
  • Achieving a timely hospital discharge
  • Transitioning from a hospital or RAC back to their community
  • Living well in the community

Finding support coordinators with this specialist expertise has been identified as a challenge by people with disability, health and aged care sectors and the NDIA.

UpSkill engages the sector to build workforce capability by:

  • Delivering training to NDIS support coordinators and allied health professionals to work within a best practice framework for people with complex disability
  • Showcasing best practice support coordination and allied health for people with complex disability
  • Providing an online community of practice (CoP) where NDIS support coordinators and allied health professionals can share their practice wisdom and seek peer support to develop their practice. Access real-time policy and practice initiatives that have implications for our work from the DSS, Health and the NDIA via the Summer Foundation.

The UpSkill program is funded to deliver 60 training sessions across Victoria and New South Wales throughout 2020 and up to June 2021. The project funding aims to increase the pool of skilled support coordinators in Victoria and New South Wales and create a framework for support coordinators to respond effectively to people with complex needs.

The UpSkill program has significant potential to make a positive difference to the lives of people with disability through the enhancement of support coordination and allied health services under the NDIS. The future of the UpSkill program is to grow an evolving and sustainable model to deliver regular and specific training and facilitation of best practice learning to support coordinators and allied health.
