About the Service

The Matthew Talbot Centre (MTC) Newcastle is in the Vinnies Services directorate. MTC is responsible for providing client centered homelessness support service to men with complex needs, rough sleepers, Aboriginal men, men with families, and men exiting institutions. The support services include prevention and early intervention, rapid rehousing, crisis and transition responses, and intensive responses for men (with or without accompanying children). The support service operates across the City of Newcastle and Lake Macquarie Local Government areas.

The Role

The position is responsible for The Tenancy Support Officer is responsible for managing onsite St Vincent de Paul accommodation and developing pathways to private rental for single men, and men and their children accessing Matthew Talbot Homeless Services. Duties include:

  • Securing new private rental housing options for MTHS clients
  • Liaising with frontline services to keep abreast of new and emerging housing options
  • Developing and managing relationships with stakeholders and liaising with Real Estate Agents.
  • Addressing tenant and neighbour complaints
  • Collating data, review and evaluate project outcomes and prepare monthly reports for the Manager
  • Developing and maintain external networks.
  • Support Case Workers to sustain residents' tenancies on site by providing fortnightly updates on rental payment received and property care
  • Identify and organise informal training with Manager to deliver training program to MTHS staff
  • Establishing and maintain operational policies and procedures

To be successful in this role, you will need:

  • Minimum Cert IV in relevant field or qualifications in Social Science/Community Welfare or other relevant field.
  • Excellent written and oral communication skills, including highly developed interpersonal skills with an ability to relate positively and confidently with a wide range of people, in a variety of settings.
  • Proven organisational skills and the ability to prioritise work/client load including people with complex and/or high-level needs,
  • Knowledge of private real estate market and awareness of the key challenges this group will experience.
  • Ability to work as part of a team and independently
  • Willingness to work within the ethos, mission and Code of Conduct of the Society
  • Sound knowledge of Workplace Health and Safety legislation
  • Sound understanding of child protection issues, legislation and requirements.
  • Ability to use database and Microsoft Office packages such as Word, Excel, Outlook
  • Current NSW Drivers Licence
