About the Service

The Support Worker position is in the Vinnies Services directorate, and is part of the Homelessness and Housing. This team is responsible for state-wide management of excellent homelessness and housing services.

The Role

The Support Worker will assist in the daily running of the site and provide a variety of support to clients at the site. You will work closely with the Case Workers in the implementation of the clients' case plans. The key responsibilities of the role will include:

  • Assisting in the entry and assessment of new clients
  • Provide informal person-centred, trauma informed case work support to the community that access Pete's Place which includes the provision of assessment, the provision of information and supported referral
  • Ensure that Pete's Place is well maintained, welcoming and appropriate to the needs of the people who access the space.
  • Providing case work support as directed and in cooperation with Case Workers
  • Advocating for clients with external agencies on a needs basis
  • Undertaking a variety of tasks i.e. serving meals, supervising activities, transporting clients and other accommodation related tasks
  • Maintaining daily Communications Book and other documentation as required e.g. client records and case notes

To be successful in this role, you will need:

  • Appropriate Certificate or equivalent experience or currently undertaking tertiary study, in a related field.
  • Excellent written and oral communication skills
  • Demonstrated customer service skills, with the ability to work with a broad range of people from a variety of backgrounds and experiences.
  • Demonstrated understanding of issues relating to homelessness.
  • Ability to work independently and as part of a team
  • Willingness to work within the ethos and vision of St Vincent de Paul Society
  • Ability to use sound judgment and act appropriately in crisis and emergency situations
  • Current first-aid certificate
  • An ability to maintain an ethical, yet non-judgmental, attitude towards residents and staff, and a commitment to this.
  • Sound knowledge of WH&S legislation as it relates to the workplace.
  • Ability to work a rotating roster covering day, afternoon and sleepover shifts.
