The St Vincent de Paul Society is a leading provider of community support services, whose mission it is to shape a more just and compassionate society.

The Role:

Vital role providing Case Work support to people accessing Vinnies Matthew Talbot Homeless Service. The Matthew Talbot Homeless Service provides support to homeless men and men with children across Newcastle and Lake Macquarie.

Your responsibilities:

  • Conducting initial intakes and assessments and providing crisis intervention where appropriate
  • Engage with persons sleeping rough and/or those people in danger of becoming homeless.
  • Refer clients to appropriate external services and link to life skill and educational programs
  • Advocate on behalf of the client at Government Departments, Courts and other service providers.
  • Undertake home visits with clients located in temporary or transitional accommodation
  • Provide a safe/welcoming environment for clients who are accessing the service and assist them to follow the services rules and procedures.
  • Where appropriate develop case plans with the clients, provide ongoing support to achieve the case plan and monitor, review and follow up the case plan.

This role will report to the Manager Homelessness and Housing.

To be successful, you will need:

  • Minimum TAFE Certificate IV or currently undertaking tertiary study, in welfare or related field
  • Previous experience providing support to marginalised and vulnerable people support to homeless persons
  • Demonstrated knowledge and experience of issues relating to homelessness including domestic violence, family breakdown, mental illness, drug, alcohol, gambling addictions and also awareness of appropriate local community support services for homeless clients.
  • Excellent written/oral communication skills & sound computer skills
  • Ability to use sound judgement and act appropriately in crisis and emergency situations
  • NSW driver licence - flexibility to travel to meet clients needs.
