Directorate overview

This position is in the Vinnies Services directorate and is part of the Homelessness and Housing team that is responsible for state-wide management of excellent homelessness and housing services.

The Role

The Case Worker is part of the Vinnies Reconnect program in Deniliquin. Reconnect is a community based early intervention and prevention program for young people aged 12 to 18 years (or 12 to 21 years in the case of newly arrived youth) who are homeless or at risk of homelessness, and their families.

The aim of Reconnect is to prevent homelessness by intervening early with families and young people to stabilise and improve their housing situation and improve their level of engagement with family, education, training, employment and their local community.

The role of the Case Worker is to work closely with vulnerable young people (and their families) who access this program, and to provide all intervention support (e.g. counselling, group work, mediation, other specialised services) and relevant resources needed.

The role will:

  • Conduct initial intake and assessment
  • Identify client's primary needs and the relevant actions to address their needs
  • Work closely with the client to develop case plans that include ongoing support, review and follow up
  • Refer clients to external services and educational programs; provide support resources
  • Conduct home visits, supervise client activities as needed
  • Maintain client records and case notes

To be successful in this role, you will need:

  • Minimum TAFE Certificate IV or currently undertaking tertiary study, in welfare or related field.
  • Previous experience providing support to marginalised and vulnerable people support to homeless persons.
  • Demonstrated knowledge of issues relating to homelessness including but not limited to family breakdown, mental illness, drug, alcohol and gambling addictions.
  • Demonstrated awareness of appropriate local community support services for homeless clients, including government agencies and NGO's, and the capacity to build and maintain strong relationships with such service providers.
  • Excellent written and oral communication skills.
  • Sound computer skills.
  • Ability to work independently and as part of a team.
  • Awareness and understanding of the Work Health and Safety legislation and a commitment to promoting safe work practices.
  • Ability to use sound judgement and act appropriately in crisis and emergency situations.
  • NSW driver licence.
