Our Service:

This is a brand new service in the ACT. Southside Community Step Up Step Down (SUSD) is designed to maximise the clinical recovery and psychosocial gains for adults (18-65 years) who are likely to benefit from sub-acute mental health care within an integrated community residential environment.

Role overview:

  • Provide quality support and services to adults with mental health concerns in a short term residential service. 
  • Work collaboratively with people in their recovery
  • Provide support that is client-focused, community oriented, and sensitive.
  • Assist people with mental health issues to develop and maintain relationships, which facilitate independence.
  • Assist people with mental health issues to improve their daily living skills through guidance, supervision, and encouragement.
  • Mentor and act as role models for people in building positive social skills, utilising effective conflict management and negotiation, and building healthy relationships.
  • Encourage and educate people on healthy living habits to support emotional well being.
  • Encourage the growth of self-esteem, self-worth, and self-confidence.

Requirements:

  • Minimum of Cert IV in mental health or community services related discipline
  • Demonstrated effective listening, empathy and communication skills
  • Experience in working with people experiencing mental illness
  • Ability to think and act calmly and deal sensitively with distressed people
  • Understanding of the principles of duty of care, rights to privacy and confidentiality
  • Ability to help program participants link in with other relevant community resources and to promote the rights, responsibilities and recovery of program participants
  • Demonstrated ability to work with families, carers, government agencies and community services
  • Willingness to abide by the Disability Services Acts and Standards and Work Health & Safety Act
  • Good computer skills, competence with Microsoft Office suite
  • Current or eligibility to obtain; working with vulnerable people (WWVP) registration and Yellow Card (or exemption)
  • Must be available for both day, weekend and overnight shifts
  • Current driver's license
