The Big Issue Australia is an independent community organisation that develops and operates social enterprises and creative, sustainable solutions to homelessness; providing opportunities for homeless and marginalised people to positively change their lives.

Our innovative programs and services focus on helping people who are socially disadvantaged, and may otherwise slip through the cracks, to build confidence and the capacity to help themselves.

Overview of the Community Street Soccer Program

Our aim is that all homeless, marginalised and disadvantaged Australians can improve their health and positively change their lives through sport. The program uses the power of sport to change lives, build healthier communities and generate social and economic returns.

Who participates in Street Soccer?

Street Soccer players come from many walks of life, but all have been marginalised in some way. This could be through mental illness, homelessness, refugee status, drug and alcohol dependency, physical disability, long-term unemployment or family breakdown.

Participants come to Street Soccer through referrals from hostels and boarding houses, community centres and welfare agencies, and through word-of-mouth from Street Soccer participants.

How does it work?

Street Soccer uses sport to engage homeless, marginalised and disadvantaged participants, creating an effective environment to deliver valuable health outcomes.

Street Soccer uses an integrated approach to address issues by combining a variety of focus areas into a weekly program in an informal and non-threatening environment.

POSITION DESCRIPTION

The State Coordinator will be responsible for the coordination and growth of the Street Soccer program in Queensland. This will include coordinating staff, administering and developing initiatives to meet strategic objectives.

The State Coordinator is responsible for managing and developing a successful soccer program in the following locations-

• Brisbane
• Townsville

and developing two new programs in regional Queensland

Key Result Areas

• Ensure effective ongoing performance of CSSP in Queensland
• Ensure strategies are implemented to increase participation numbers and create opportunities for health outcomes and social inclusion as per KPIs.
• Foster relationships with all councils, community organisations and football leagues in each metropolitan and regional area with the aim to increase participation, reach attendance targets and ensure support for the CSSP in Queensland
• Regularly attend and provide coaching support to the metropolitan programs in Queensland
• Visit all regional CSSP regularly (as determined by State Operations Manager).
• Offer information and refer participants on a range of issues such as health, mental health, drug and alcohol dependency and vocational training as required.
• Coordinate a team of volunteers to support training sessions and other events in all areas.
• Build CSSP to become embedded into each community for a sustainable future
• Assist with the coordination of Queensland teams for National Camp & Championships

Key Skills and Knowledge

• Highly developed interpersonal skills;

• Ability to engage and develop relationships with disadvantaged people.
• Ability to engage and develop relationships with community agencies, government and business;
• Ability to write and create and reports;
• Some understanding of factors in health and well-being of homeless people including people with substance abuse issues and mental illness;
• Ability to recruit, train and supervise volunteers;
• Experience in running leisure recreational activities for disadvantaged people would be desirable but not essential;
• Demonstrated skills in project development. 

Specific Tasks

• Managing Staff
  • Manage and direct staff to deliver and maintain the day-to-day operations in each program
  • Interview and hire staff in conjunction with the State Operations Manager.
  • Ensure professional development and education of CSSP strategies to staff.
  • Ensure staff achieve KPI’s.
  • Conduct fortnightly phone catch ups with all direct reports including Coordinator/Coaches.
• Coordination of Street Soccer Program
  • Coordinate the Community Street Soccer Program in Queensland
  • Conduct meetings with key stakeholders in each region.
  • Work with the State Operations Manager to implement and monitor program initiatives in the annual work plan for each program to create participation and social inclusion outcomes.
  • Contribute to the operation, development and success of The Big Issue and perform other duties as reasonably requested.
• Ensure Effective Administration of the program
  • Regular briefing to the State Operations Manager on all relevant matters.
  • Prepare papers and reports as required.
  • Maintain records and correspondence.
  • Maintain professional standards for the organisation.
  • Ensure to answer phones, correspondence etc in a professional manner.
  • Participate in the development of annual budgets and maintain financial controls to monitor budget performance.
  • Establish and maintain effective project and participant monitoring of performance outcomes.
• Finance
  • Manage and account for day to day finance of Community Street Soccer Program in Queensland.
  • Prepare financial reports for internal requirements (e.g. budget for staff meetings).
• Liaise with Key Stakeholders
  • Maintain and work with all TBI internal stakeholders including other members of the National Operations team, Marketing, Finance and Editorial
  • Develop ongoing relationships with key stakeholders including community agencies, NGO’s and individual supporters;
  • Maintain regular contact with vendors/players and attend vendor/player meetings.
