The St John’s Opportunity Shop is an outreach mission of the St John’s Uniting Church in Elsternwick, Victoria.

The aims of St John’s Opportunity Shop are to:

  • Provide a safe and welcoming place for all as part of the outreach of St John’s Uniting Church
  • Raise funds from the sale of donated goods for Uniting Church and community charities

We are seeking a motivated person with an understanding of our aims to assist our Retail Manager to operate our shop which has been part of the Elsternwick community for over 20 years.

To be successful in this position you will need the confidence to deal with a highly diverse range of people and situations with enthusiasm and flexibility.

The Job

This is a fixed term part time contract position (up to 20 hours per week) until 14 April 2022. The shop is open six days per week (from Monday to Saturday). It is negotiable how the 20 hours are rostered but coverage of the Op Shop opening hours is required across the staff positions.

The position is located at the shopfront at 302 Glenhuntly Road Elsternwick 3185.

The position reports to the Opportunity Shop Retail Manager and through that position to the Chair of the Opportunity Shop Management Committee.

The employment conditions of this position are covered by the General Retail Industry Award 2020. The position is paid at the Level 3 rate of the Award.

Core duties

  • Assisting the Retail Manager in receiving donated goods, pricing, preparing for sale and in-store and online sales as required.
  • Overseeing the operation of the shop in the absence of the Retail Manager (non-rostered hours, annual leave, sick leave etc)
  • Providing supervision, support and direction where needed for volunteers in the shop.
  • Opening or closing of the Shop as well as depositing cash receipts, if required.
  • Ensuring compliance with policies and procedures
  • Other related tasks as directed.

Core skills / experience

  • Previous experience in a retail store including pricing, preparing goods for sale, and in in-store and online sales would be well regarded.
  • Proven ability in developing, motivating and supervising volunteers is desirable.
  • Previous experience in an Opportunity Shop would be well regarded.
  • Appropriate knowledge of Work Health and Safety (WHS) legislation and practices in a retail environment, including CovidSafe planning for staff and customers is highly desirable.
  • A current First Aid Certificate is desirable.
  • A satisfactory Police Check, Working with Children Check, and right to work in Australia are all requirements.
