About the role

Active for over 130 years, St John Ambulance Queensland, a well-respected and widely known organisation is seeking a new Chief Executive Officer (CEO). St John Ambulance Qld is a self-funding, member-led charitable organisation, dedicated to helping people in sickness, distress, suffering or danger. It forms part of the international Order of St John and provides services to the Queensland community – including being a leading supplier of first aid products, community services and first training. Each year we deliver thousands hours of voluntary community service. We are currently going through significant change.

Being a major international charity, the Order of St John provides first aid, health care and support services in over 40 countries - with volunteers and staff of over 400,000. The Order of St John (the Order) traces its origins back 900 years to the Knights Hospitaller from whom St John today derives its inspiration and maxims – Pro Fide Pro Utilitate Hominum, 'For the Faith and in the Service of Humanity.'

Key duties

  • Leading and coordinating the execution of the Strategic Plan on behalf of the Board
  • Overseeing financial success and service delivery sustainability in keeping with our key aims so as to fund charitable purposes
  • Leading service delivery and improvement reviews to ensure the organisation delivers innovative and compassionate care including first aid support to events, training and community services
  • Championing valued-based successful business process improvements and operational change strategies
  • Leading and managing governance and quality frameworks and systems to enable best practice care and services, meeting required standards and compliance and the organisation’s strategic objectives
  • Providing leadership of staff and volunteers in conjunction with the Order’s established leadership framework(s) – being sensitive to the particular opportunities that a large volunteer base afford
  • Working collaboratively with peers in other states/territories to ensure the Ambulance and the Order in Australia is well positioned to meet current and emerging needs
  • Exercising statutory accountabilities related to charities, corporations and the like
  • Sourcing, negotiating and developing key service delivery contracts and associated accountability, funding and policy issues – that meet core and emerging humanitarian aims
  • Working across Queensland – with Governments and other bodies, on care, ambulatory, allied health and first aid issues including progressing national policy discussions on these

Essential

  • Demonstrated, respect for and advancement of the Order’s ideals and traditions and yet with a 21st century focus on sustainable, humanitarian care
  • Extensive experience in working strategically and collaboratively with a focused board which is very clear on its core strategy and humanitarian aims
  • Considerable experience in driving and growing key revenue focused on ‘surplus for purpose’
  • General management experience in a like organisation – and with executive skills in people care, finance, strategic planning and execution, external partnership development – yet with a demonstrated ability to engage at the coal face and to lead by personal example, noting this can often be a “hands on” community leadership role
  • Proven ability to financially steward a complex charity with multiple stakeholders – government, community, allied health and charities

Desirable

  • Senior leadership in a multi-dimensional member-led organisation preferably one in an allied health, community setting and/or NGO/charity context
  • Qualifications in community development, allied health or related disciplines
