Data Engineer

St John Ambulance

Do you want to work for an iconic Western Australian organisation committed to changing lives and making a difference to your community?

St John WA is a charitable, not-for-profit organisation that is most known for providing WA’s ambulance service, but also delivers a range of healthcare services to support healthy and resilient communities. For example:

  • we maintain a state-wide network of defibrillators;
  • we teach life-saving first aid skills to more than 400,000 people each year; and
  • our Urgent Care centres provide an alternate pathway for minor injuries and illnesses, rather than congesting hospital emergency departments.

A job to be proud of:

The Business Intelligence department at St John WA uses data analysis and visualisation tools to help the organisation make informed decisions to better serve the community.

The department consists of 14 staff split between an Analysis and Reporting unit, and a Data Engineering and Governance unit. Current team members have diverse backgrounds with qualifications including physics, mathematics, software engineering, biotechnology, and business, as well as having previously worked across the government, private, academic, and defence sectors.

An exciting full-time opportunity is now available for a Data Engineer to join the team in a permanent position, based at our head office in Belmont.

Note that this position can be filled at an Intermediate, Senior, or Principal level, subject to the skills and experience of the successful candidate. As such applications are encouraged from both experienced professionals keen to contribute their skills to a community focussed organisation, as well as more junior data engineers looking for the next step in their career.

What you’ll do:

Our Data Engineers are responsible for developing and maintaining the St John WA data warehouse for the purpose of facilitating commercial, operational, and strategic reporting. You will be part of a highly capable, motivated, and collegial team, with a mandate to engage with and influence key stakeholders from various levels across the organisation and to provide high quality services to St John WA and the community.

You will have strong support from management and the organisation to implement our vision of what Business Intelligence can be now and in the future, as well as being given the space to work proactively, innovate, and drive new initiatives. The team operates with flexible work arrangements and provides excellent professional development opportunities.

What you’ll need:

The successful candidate will have excellent critical thinking skills and attention to detail, combined with experience in a similar role working with complex data in a fast-paced organisation.

Note: experience specific to the health care sector is not a requirement, and candidates with transferable technical skills from any background are encouraged to apply.

Further, the ideal candidate will demonstrate:

  • Strong knowledge of T-SQL
  • Very strong conceptual and critical thinking skills
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills with an ability to engage and influence key stakeholders and articulate complex concepts
  • Experience in developing and managing best practice datasets, data models and data warehouses to address business objectives
  • Proven ability to manage multiple activities and prioritise workload, while working both autonomously and in a team environment
  • Experience integrating data from different sources in accordance with robust quality assurance processes
  • Experience in documenting data structures and processes.

The following would also be beneficial, but are not required:

  • Exposure to data warehousing concepts and tools
  • Exposure to Power BI Premium

The required qualifications:

  • Relevant tertiary qualifications (computer science, information technology etc), or substantial experience in a related field
  • Demonstrated, ongoing development and continuous learning

What we offer:

  • Rewarding and diverse work giving back to your community
  • Great supportive team with an innovative and flexible working environment
