The Organisation

STARTTS is a not-for-profit Affiliated Health Organisation focused on providing a broad range of services to refugees in NSW. The focus of STARTTS approach is on building capacity and empowering people and communities to take control over their own lives, using a strengths-based approach and building on individual, family, community and cultural strengths.

The Role

The FICT/CD Project Officer will enhance infrastructure and capacity of refugee communities settling in Wagga Wagga area with the aim of creating a supportive environment for torture and trauma survivors. The position will focus on the provision of appropriate group-work interventions using a culturally congruent approach including the recruitment, training, supervision and support of a pool of Bi-Cultural FICT Program Facilitators, as well as refugee community capacity building initiatives.

The successful applicant will be part of a multicultural and multi-disciplinary team.

Skills and Qualifications Required

Essential:

  1. Tertiary qualifications in Adult Education, Community Development, Social Work, Social Science or other relevant field or significant experience in the field.
  2. Demonstrated experience in planning, implementing and evaluating groups in a cross-cultural context.  
  3. Demonstrated knowledge and experience in community development, project management, advocacy, partnership building and community liaison in a multicultural context.
  4. Experience in working with refugee families and understanding of the issues refugee families and older people face through the process of exile, migration and settlement.
  5. Experience in supervising or mentoring others.
  6. Ability to work independently and as part of a multidisciplinary team within a multicultural environment and to meet deadlines.
  7. Proven excellent oral, written and interpersonal communication skills, computer literacy and proficiency in the use of Microsoft Office.
  8. Current NSW driver’s licence.

Desirable: 

  1. Bi-lingual in a community language relevant to refugee communities living in NSW.
  2. Experience in providing training in a multicultural context.
  3. Knowledge of stakeholders in refugee/migrant sector in the Wagga Wagga area.

This position is considered child-related employment and will require a Working with Children Background Check and a National Police Check.

Reach of role may also extend to surrounding area including Albury.

In line with the Public Health Order, all STARTTS workers are considered Health Workers and are required to be vaccinated against COVID-19. In order to be eligible for consideration for employment with STARTTS, all recruits must provide evidence of vaccination against COVID-19, or alternatively provide a Medical Contraindication in the approved form which complies with the requirements of the Public Health Order, prior to appointment.

Salary:​Health Education Officer, or other relevant classification based on qualifications, experience and requirements of the role under the NSW Health Awards. A generous salary packaging scheme is also offered to reduce the taxable income and increase the take home pay.
