STaR's three strategic pillars are:

  • Educating Educators: Providing quality, research-based training and mentoring to educators and support workers.
  • Lifelong Special Education: Implementing best practice by coaching and mentoring educators in inclusive early learning programs and support workers in adult supported living and work settings, and providing family support.
  • Informing Communities: Advocating for special education to a range of audiences.

Your tasks and responsibilities will include:

  • Model best practice and evidence-based intervention strategies to educators and support workers (key workers).
  • Coach and mentor key workers in strategies to implement plans within the daily routines and activities of a person’s day.
  • Assess the skills of people with disabilities across all developmental domains or skills and support key workers to do this.
  • Assist key workers to develop an Individual Learning Plan (ILP) and conduct ILP meetings for a person with disabilities in collaboration with families, reports, therapists, and other professionals.
  • Assist key workers to monitor individuals progress in achieving objectives, assist them to use progress data to modify or update their programs and write reports.
  • Develop behaviour management programs, in consultation with key workers and families, and assist in the implementation of strategies.
  • Plan and implement academic and transition programs as required. Work cooperatively with key workers and professionals from other agencies to provide the best possible programs for people with disabilities.
  • Provide or assist with the provision of professional development/workshops to families and staff in participating centres.
  • Maintain a system of collection and storage of assessment data.
  • Other duties as requested by the Manager.

Essential for the position are:

  • A one-year full-time equivalent qualification in Special Education, such as Postgraduate Diploma in Special Education, Master of Special Special Education, Bachelor of Education major in Special Education, Diploma of Special Education.
  • Bachelor of Early Childhood Teaching
  • Experience in working with people with disability.
  • Experience in educating and mentoring adults
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills.
  • Current driver's license and own vehicle.
  • Successful completion of a NSW Working with Children Check and Police Check.
  • COVID-19 vaccination certificate.

Desirable for the position are:

  • Interest in presenting workshops.
  • A commitment to research participation.
