We have an exciting opportunity for a Trainee Data Scientist to join our company. The successful candidate will be supporting other members of the data team on all tasks in the survey cycle such as survey sample preparation, data collection preparation, survey and in-field reminder launch, administration of survey fieldwork progress monitoring, data analysis, tabulation, data visualisation, and other ad hoc data reporting.

This is a permanent, full-time opportunity, based at our Melbourne CBD office. A Trainee Data Scientist at the Social Research Centre typically completes a traineeship within 12 to 18 months and progresses to become a Data Scientist in the company. Due to restrictions arising from the COVID-19 pandemic, the successful candidate will initially be required to work remotely. A suitable home workspace and computer setup, and reliable internet connection are required.

The Trainee Data Scientist role at the Social Research Centre is heavily involved in data manipulation and survey data processing. Programming experience in R or Python or SQL is essential. Previous professional experience in working with data, databases or in computer programming will be highly regarded.

Key responsibilities in this role:

Support other members of the data team to undertake tasks such as survey sample preparation, data collection preparation, survey and in-field reminder launch, administration of fieldwork progress monitoring, data analysis, data visualisation, tabulation, and other ad hoc data reporting.

Key Selection Criteria:

  • Programming experience using R or Python or SQL to manipulate or analyse complex data sets.
  • An understanding of database concepts and data-entity relationships.
  • Experience with using MS Office and Windows.
  • Meticulous attention to detail and ability to observe inaccuracies in data.
  • Ability to follow instructions and work in a logical and methodical manner.
  • Demonstrated ability to handle multiple deadlines without impacting quality/timing.
  • Ability to think "outside the box" to find creative solutions to problems.
  • A team player who is focused on the overall performance of the department/organisation.
  • Well-developed verbal and written communication skills and an ability to communicate complex data concepts to a non-technical audience.
  • Tertiary qualifications in a relevant discipline, such as Statistics, Mathematics, Computer science, Analytics or Informatics.
  • A good understanding of the ethical and legal responsibilities pertaining to data confidentiality and privacy.

Desirable:

  • Experience with version control tools (e.g. Git/Subversion).
  • Exposure to project management and collaboration platforms such as GitHub.
  • Experience in T-SQL, including creating functions, stored procedures, scripts, views and triggers.
  • Experience with data visualisation in Power BI or Tableau.
