About Speak Out and the role:

Speak Out is a state-wide advocacy organisation that works together with people with disability about rights. We want an energetic, keen Aboriginal person or Torres Strait Islander person to join our dynamic team. The position is based in Burnie, NW Tasmania.

You will mostly work with individual advocacy clients, the Speak Out Disability Royal Commission team, and walk alongside communities.

The position is classified as Social and Community Service Employee under the Social, Community, Home Care and Disability Services Industry Award 2010. Pay level 4 or 5 depending on experience and qualifications.

This position is fixed term till 1 July 2022 with a 6-month probationary period.

Job tasks and responsibilities:

Individual advocacy is issues-based. The Disability Advocate provides information, options and referral so each client can make informed decisions about what they want to do. The Disability Advocate is directed by the client and works to get the outcome the client wants through an Advocacy Agreement. This part of the role is working with Indigenous people and non-Indigenous people.

With the Disability Royal Commission part of the role, there is a focus on Aboriginal people and Torres Strait Islander people. The Disability Advocate will:

  • Deliver education/awareness raising sessions about the Disability Royal Commission
  • Work together about the Disability Royal Commission and the support services available should a person wish to make a submission
  • Use a trauma-informed approach to plan together the best way for a person who wants to participate in the Disability Royal Commission to tell their story
  • Give advice on any issues/risks that may arise while engaging with the Disability Royal Commission
  • Refer people to other agencies as required.

Skills and Experience

You:

  • Understand human rights and disability
  • Can communicate in ways that suit the individual/people groups
  • Have a broad knowledge of community services
  • Can develop and maintain networks
  • Can work out what’s wrong
  • Have computer skills in Office 365 – Outlook, Powerpoint, Word
  • Can travel within the state and stay overnight if needed
  • Have a current driver’s license

It is desirable if you have:

  • Experience in the Community Service sector
  • A tertiary qualification, Diploma, Certificate IV or vocational training that is relevant to community services

All staff employed at Speak Out must complete a Working with Vulnerable People check and Police Check. Speak Out will pay for this.
