Due to growth in our organisation, we are seeking a community lawyer with a focus on policy and student supervision to join the team. In this exciting, multi-faceted role you will have the opportunity to deeply analyse the law and its application within the complex attributes of disadvantage that create social justice issues impacting our community.
You will be supported to develop excellent mentoring and supervision skills to guide students in building skills and awareness of both legal practice and social justice issues impacting the community.
You will have the opportunity to gain exposure to a wide range of legal issues while contributing to advocacy initiatives to build a fairer and more equitable justice system.
As part of a close knit, values driven team, you will spend 1 day each week on dedicated policy work, 2 days supervising student legal practice and 1 day on individual legal practice.

Established in 1973, Springvale Monash Legal Service (SMLS) is a community legal centre that provides free legal assistance to people in Southeast Melbourne.
SMLS is committed to advocacy and social change. SMLS is a leader in the provision of community and clinical legal education; advocacy through policy submissions and lobbying; outreach services; and targeted referral programs.
Skills and Experience
Must hold a full practising certificate in Victoria with minimum 3 years post admission experience, with at least 1 year experience after supervision lifted
Demonstrated legal casework experience in a broad range of practice areas, with specific experience in employment law and an interest in policy work
Demonstrated commitment to social justice and awareness of the legal needs of disadvantaged and marginalised people
Supervision experience or a demonstrated ability to develop these skills
Strong research and writing skills, ideally with a policy focus
Qualifications/licences
Law Degree with minimum 3 years post admission experience
Working with Children Card (or willingness to obtain one)

The position will be based between the SMLS offices in Springvale and Narre Warren, with work also conducted at outreach and court locations. Occasional work outside normal office hours may be required, such as to attend meetings and after hours events.
