The Smith Family is an independent children's charity helping Australian children living in disadvantage to get the most out of their education, so they can create better futures for themselves. We are currently seeking a full-time Research and Advocacy Officer to join our team.

Reporting to the Research and Evaluation Manager, you will make a significant contribution to longitudinal research and evaluation studies focussed on the educational outcomes of young people experiencing disadvantage.

A day in the life of a Research and Advocacy Officer might look like this, but every day will be different. You will be responsible for:

  • Conducting a range of descriptive analyses on longitudinal quantitative datasets, using Stata
  • Supporting the administration and conduct of research and evaluation projects
  • Preparing draft reports and presentations
  • Contributing to the interpretation of research and evaluation findings
  • Developing and maintaining internal and external relationships with research and evaluation participants and stakeholders.

Given the scope and importance of this role, we are looking for a person who has demonstrated workplace experience on research and/or evaluation projects. Ideally, you will have a solid understanding of contemporary social policy issues relating to the education of children and young people from disadvantaged backgrounds. You will have strong quantitative analytic skills in Stata or a similar package. You will be highly organised and be able to manage multiple competing priorities and tight time frames.

It takes a special person to be a Research and Advocacy Officer. Our successful candidate will bring the following:

  • Relevant tertiary qualifications
  • Workplace experience in conducting applied quantitative research and evaluation in the government, non-government or academic sectors
  • Strong quantitative data analytic skills
  • Experience in drafting research and evaluation materials
  • Experience working at the research-policy-practice interface
  • High level communication skills, both written and verbal
  • Strong interpersonal skills and natural ability to influence
  • Capacity to work on concurrent projects
  • Ideally, you’ll also have experience in conducting qualitative research or evaluation projects.

Living up to our employment promise, our team members tell us that working for The Smith Family provides great job flexibility and the ability to work alongside committed, passionate and professional team members whilst engaging in challenging, fulfilling and diverse work. In turn, our team members believe they offer commitment to our vision, mission and values and effective collaboration with fellow team members to deliver strong performance outcomes.
