Seniors Rights Service has been assisting older Australians as the leading provider of legal services, aged care advocacy and rights education and information to seniors in NSW since 1986. Seniors Rights Service provides support to older people to know and assert their rights. We have a free legal service as well as aged care advocacy and service system navigator programs. Seniors Rights Service also delivers community education and information of relevance to older people across NSW.

ABOUT THE ROLE

Due to internal movement, we have a fantastic opportunity for an experienced Solicitor who specialises in strata law to join our legal team based in our Surry Hills office. This role will provide high quality generalist legal advice, legal information and perform tasks with a focus on issues arising in older persons strata law and provide general information and advice regarding strata law and strata issues to socially and economically disadvantaged older people across NSW. This role may also assist with other legal issues and matters as required.

This role has access to hybrid work arrangements which include a blend of community-based, office-based and remote working arrangements. This position is offered on a 35 hour per week max-term contract arrangement to the end of June 2023, aligning with our current funding period and has the potential to extend.

Key responsibilities include:

  • providing phone, virtual and face to face advice and casework to older people who may be disadvantaged
  • Undertake Tribunal or Court work and advocating on behalf of clients prior to tribunals
  • Presenting community legal education seminars to older persons across NSW as required
  • Assisting in the development of community legal education collateral, resources and promotional materials
  • Performing research and assisting with law reform projects
  • Assisting clients to obtain legal aid or pro-bono support as appropriate
  • Providing casework and client matter reports for inclusion in Staff Meeting and Management Committee reports
  • Contributing to team discussions to improve service provision to callers & clients
  • Attend and participate in CLCNSW and NACLC Conferences as appropriate
  • Undertake MCPD courses as required
  • Maintain the highest ethical standards both with clients and other staff and members of the community generally

ABOUT YOU

  • Current unrestricted legal practicing certificate from the Legal Practice Board of New South Wales with at least three years’ post-admission experience.
  • Broad knowledge and demonstrated experience across the main areas of law of a generalist Community Legal Centre such as Power of Attorney, Family Law, Wills and Estates
  • Excellent legal research, interpersonal and written communication skills with the ability to interact sensitively and effectively with a broad range of stakeholders
  • Experience developing and presenting Community Legal Education sessions and the ability to travel to conduct outreach
  • Ability to work under pressure and to apply contemporary problem-solving techniques
  • Autonomy, passion and the ability to work well in a team with a strong commitment to social justice
  • Excellent computer skills, experience in data entry and fluent in Microsoft Office 365
  • Willingness to obtain an annual flu vaccination and be fully COVID vaccinated. Hold a valid federal police record check and driver’s license.
