Second Chance Animal Rescue (SCAR) is a progressive animal welfare shelter whose mission is to not only rescue, rehabilitate and re-home homeless animals, but to also create community-focused solutions aimed at keeping pets in homes and out of pounds. Our Volunteer Program is an essential part of our progressive mission, enabling us to help thousands of homeless animals and disadvantaged pet owners each year. SCAR heavily relies on the help of our many volunteers to help us meet our lifesaving goals.

We are looking for a knowledgeable, friendly, adaptable and animal-loving people-person to join our passionate team as our Volunteer and Events Coordinator. If the following describes you, we want you to apply!

The Volunteer and Events Coordinator is responsible for the success, management and expansion of our volunteer program, ensuring that volunteers are effectively utilised and continuously supported to provide maximum lifesaving opportunities for animals in need. They will also assist in coordinating local event opportunities. This is a key leadership position that requires a can-do attitude and a commitment to problem solving. They will interact closely with many different people and departments so must be approachable, friendly and upbeat. The Volunteer and Events Coordinator supports the mission, goals and philosophy of SCAR.

The right person will have volunteer management skills and understand the importance of having compassion and empathy when interacting with people, harbouring respect for both animals and people, as well as having an intrinsic concern and affection for animals.

Duties:

  • Uphold SCAR’s values and mission statement during interactions with the public and team members and adhere to its policies and procedures.
  • Identify opportunities to attract, engage, upskill and retain our volunteer base.
  • Run regular new volunteer induction sessions.
  • Coordinate and maintain training requirements of all volunteers in conjunction with other appropriate departments.
  • Coordinate volunteer recognition and engagement opportunities.
  • Maintain up-to-date volunteer records and track volunteer hours.
  • Serve as a primary contact for all shelter and event volunteers.
  • Ensuring compliance with all SCAR SOP’s and policies.
  • Provide constant support to volunteers as well as emotional and compassion fatigue references.
  • Keep all volunteer materials and programs up to date, and provide appropriate orientation materials, manuals, and handouts to all volunteers.
  • Manage the SCAR Volunteer Facebook group and email address.
  • Track relevant data on volunteer programs and report to Shelter Supervisor monthly.
  • Manage an accurate and up-to-date volunteer database.
  • Establish and update volunteer SOP’s and policies to create opportunity for continuous program improvement.
  • Coordinate and/ attend special events pertinent to any volunteer programs.
  • Ensure daily volunteer practices are compliant with WHS requirements (in the shelter and during events).
  • Coordinate paperwork and other requirements for upcoming events.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities

  • Commitment to the mission, goals and success of SCAR.
  • Enthusiasm and a can-do attitude.
  • Empathy and a non-judgmental approach.
  • Previous animal handling experience (Vet Nursing qualification and/or experience working in an animal shelter will be highly regarded).
  • Minimum 2 years proven customer service experience.
  • Volunteer management experience.
  • Ability to multitask in a busy workplace/ non-profit environment.
  • Ability to establish and maintain effective and cooperative working relations with the public and other employees.
  • Flexibility, adaptability, aptitude for effective prioritising under pressure.
  • A strong work ethic, happy to go above and beyond.
  • Strong computer skills, including Microsoft Office and database systems.
  • Current driver’s licence.
