Sea Shepherd sees the key threats to ocean to be, Plastic Pollution, Illegal Fishing, Climate Change, and threats to vulnerable and endangered species.
Sea Shepherd Australia’s Marine Debris Campaign is on the front lines, fighting against the scourge of plastics that pollute coastlines and waterways. We have committed volunteer marine debris teams located all around Australia hosting regular community clean-ups and conduct intensive remote clean-up campaigns in places that demonstrate that no-where is safe from marine plastic pollution.
The National Marine Debris Campaigner (MDC) will be required to run Sea Shepherd Australia’s Marine Debris / Ocean plastic defence campaign. They will assist in developing the strategy of the campaign as well as overseeing the execution of the campaign to protect Australia’s coasts and marine life from plastic pollution.
The campaign will directly give marine life reprieve from lethal plastic and indirectly assist with plastic industry reform via government submissions and alike. The role will also involve clean up participation at times to stay connected with the campaign and crew.
The role involves building relationships with key stakeholders, fostering strategic partnerships and participating in government meetings, panels and submissions in order to maximise minimising ocean plastics. The MDC will also be a key spokesperson and writer for the campaign and educator across various social media / media channels, schools and potentially corporate partners.
The role will also provide reports to the Sea Shepherd Australian board and other key stakeholders. The role reports directly to the Managing Director. The role leads and works closely with our Marine Debris Administration Coordinator, Remote Marine Debris Coordinator, and volunteer Marine Debris Team Coordinators located around Australia.

We are seeking an experienced, motivated, independent, values-driven campaigner with a passion and understanding of the not-for-profit sector. This role will suit someone who is enthusiastic, organised, with a can-do attitude and a flexible approach to tasks and working hours. The successful candidate will have a the ability to focus on tangible outcomes and think strategically, while also putting on many hats at times. This is a busy role in a small, but passionate team.
