About the role

The Business Manager is a critical leadership position with a high level of responsibility for all aspects of business development. In order to achieve our strategic fundraising ambitions we seek an individual capable of grasping this challenge. As the driving force behind the development of our various income streams, you will ensure that we enhance and grow our regular and individual giving programs, as well as making more effective use of the team and our volunteer resources to continue to drive new and innovative ways of developing our fundraising capability. You will also lead and develop our strategy for developing income from multiple areas. All of this will allow us the financial freedom to defend, conserve and protect marine wildlife globally.

You will be responsible for implementing and overseeing ideas and strategies to help to increase and diversify SSAL revenue streams to ensure strong financial sustainability. In conjunction with the Managing Director and the SSAL Management team, you will be the key point of contact and support for all fundraising activities, working collaboratively across multiple levels of the organisation, as well as with external supporters, donors, volunteers and other stakeholders to ensure that the needs of SSAL are met and new opportunities are identified. You will provide expert knowledge and advice to the Managing Director and Board in order to deliver strong operational outcomes for Sea Shepherd.

You will be developing and implementing something brand new for Sea Shepherd which will involve completing strategy and budget for all streams that work into Acquisition, Retention and Development through cash giving and regular giving, as well as philanthropic endeavours through Major donors, bequests plus corporate giving and partnerships. You will deliver a combination of an unrivalled supporter experience and internal process efficiency and efficacy. As well as income growth and relationship management through personal and customised supporter journeys with a focus on minimum cost per acquisition with maximum ROI, while ensuring the supporter experience remains exceptional no matter the rate or intensity of growth.

You will be highly skilled at database development and data analysis, as well as demonstrating proven results in digital fundraising strategies, email marketing and donor journeys/stewardship.

Sea Shepherd is a very lean organisation and there are less than a dozen of us spread across the country. You will have overall responsibility for a very small Fundraising and Merchandise team, however, with management in place there will be the scope to grow the team.

To exceed in this role you will:

  • Have a solid track record in developing and delivering strategic fundraising and marketing plans with measurable outcomes;
  • Be adept at creating data and insight driven innovating goals and implementing strategies & budgets to achieve objectives across multiple channels and audiences;
  • Delivering budgeted revenue across income streams including, but not limited to, acquisition, regular giving, direct mail, telefundraising, DRTV, online & digital, major & middle donors and bequests;
  • Deliver an unrivalled customer experience and donor journey;
  • Be a critical thinker and problem solver;
  • Oversee the planning and implementation of a comprehensive fundraising program that secures significant financial resources from individuals, philanthropic foundations, corporations, third party fundraisers and corporate partners;
  • Build networks and develop new partnership opportunities with corporate, industry, and private donors;
  • Develop and implement integrated donor stewardship and retention strategies to build supporter engagement and retention across giving channels;
  • Provide database & CRM management and analysis with multiple platforms;
  • Multi level and multiannual revenue growth strategy and budget;
  • Establish and implement a bequest, workplace giving, and major gifts program;
  • Have experience in delivering high performance results, working with limited resources;
  • Able to function well independently and as a member of a team with proven leadership qualities and a comprehensive understanding of income growth, supporter loyalty and operational business complexities;
  • Have proven ability in driving strong data and insight driven individual and team performance within set KPIs including; income growth, lead generation, productivity, supporter retention & development, quality assurance and multi-level SLAs;
  • Oversee the donor/fundraising database development and functionality and have the ability to analyse donor data;
  • Manage the budgeting of income and expenses involved in fundraising;
  • Have excellent relationship building and relationship management skills, including highly developed engagement and communication skills and ability to represent the organisation to a range of stakeholders;
  • Work with existing, and seek out new, foundations;
  • Bring together information for grant applications, be that government, or foundations;
  • driven and reliable professional with noted experience in the not for profit sector in fundraising, customer & user experience, contact centre management and digital industries.

Role Requirement

  • Bachelor’s degree in Business, Business Management, or other related field;
  • At least 5 years' experience working in a Partnerships/Sponsorship role;
  • Extensive experience in fundraising and effective business development in a commercial or NFP sector.
