About The Program

The Family Preservation Program delivers targeted voluntary intervention services to children and young people aged 0-17 where concerns of risk of significant harm have been raised.

The primary outcome of the Family Preservation Program is to keep children and young people within their safe and stable family by improving family functioning and reducing risk and safety concerns so they can have a healthy development.

The voluntary programs focus is on preventing vulnerable children from entering the child protection system by improving children and young people's wellbeing.

About The Role

This is an Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander identified position (a genuine occupational qualification and is authorised under section 14(d) of the Anti-Discrimination Act 1977).

You will work in partnership with families, practitioners and leaders using a coaching approach to embed culturally responsive service delivery to Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander children, young people and their families that is focussed on clear, achievable goals with the aim of reducing risk and increasing safety for children ensuring that crucial conversations happen to address risk of harm concerns and systemic patterns of behaviour.

You will build and strengthen working relationships with external stakeholders, specifically Aboriginal services, contributing to SDN’s reputation in the community and sector.

This is a full time maximum term contract position until December 2022 based at our Redfern office with travel within Sydney Metro required.

About You

To succeed in this role you will need:

  • Qualifications in Social Work, Community Development or related discipline with experience working in a family support and/or Children’s services
  • Demonstrated skills in cultural competency and an ability to articulate your cultural knowledge/lens
  • Demonstrated ability to support Aboriginal and/or Torres Strait Islander children and families with vulnerabilities such as domestic and family violence, mental health, drug and alcohol misuse and a lack of parenting skills
  • Strong networking skills and a knowledge of Aboriginal specific community services
  • Ability to work with a range of professional disciplines and strong coaching/mentoring skills
  • Highly developed communication skills, with the ability to write clear and concise reports and represent the program and organisation at both internal and external settings, both authentically and professionally
  • Experience in planning and delivering cultural and practice workshops to support capacity building
  • An understanding of NSW Child Protection Guidelines and relevant legislation
  • Current drivers licence and own comprehensively insured car and willingness to travel within the Sydney Metropolitan area
  • Working with Children Check and a National Police Check
