Spinal Cord Injuries Australia (SCIA) is a leading for purpose organisation committed to ensuring ongoing empowerment and independence for people living with a spinal cord injury.  We are passionate about continually improving our services and providing maximum opportunity for those whose lives are affected by spinal cord injury.

We have a rewarding position of Advocacy Officer available for a 12 month fixed term contract, with the possibility to extend beyond this period.  The primary responsibility of this role is providing individual advocacy to people with disability experiencing any issues related to services and supports across the NDIS, health, housing, employment, transport, education et cetera.

The SCIA Advocacy Services team is at the forefront of advocating for the rights of people with Spinal Cord Injury at both systemic and individual level.  We have a broad and inclusive workforce and our head office team has a representation of approximately 25% of people living with disability.

The key responsibilities of this role include:

  • Meeting with individuals, whether by phone, in person, or by email/web contact, in order to respond to Individual needs and requests for information
  • Providing individual advocacy support, developing and implementing an individual plan in partnership with the applicant
  • Providing education and skills development, such as self-advocacy support for individuals and self-advocacy group sessions
  • Ensuring the philosophy, mission and goals of empowerment are maintained or enhanced
  • Providing assistance to individuals in navigating NDIS internal review and external review through the Administrative Appeals Tribunal, including participating in case conferences and attending hearings
  • Working with individuals in partnership with other SCIA staff and community agencies to get needs addressed.
  • Assisting consumers to identify goals and develop independence

To succeed in the role, you will:

  • Be an experienced collaborator and able to effectively engage with the policy and advocacy team.
  • Possess a strong belief in pursuing equality and full inclusion for people living with spinal-cord injury (SCI) and other disabilities.
  • Demonstrate a comprehensive understanding of the Disability sector and awareness of associated issues and barriers faced by individuals living with disability
  • Demonstrated experience and skill in advocacy process and practice
  • Demonstrated effective written and verbal communication skills
  • Be highly computer literate with strong database usage skills

The position is to be worked in a full-time capacity (37.5 hours per week) and is based from both home (During COVID this role will work mainly from their home location)and our Ydney Head Office at Littel Bay. People with a disability are encouraged to apply.
