We have an exciting new role of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples Community Liaison and Advocacy Officer. The primary responsibility of this role is to ensure that Aboriginal People living with a disability, their families and support people understand the services available to them by the SCIA advocacy team, feel welcomed, and are encouraged to reach out for advocacy support. The initial focus of this role is primarily community liaison and this will transition to include advocacy support to clients as the role becomes established.

Spinal Cord Injuries Australia (SCIA) is a member-based national for purpose organisation that promotes independence and provides services to people with a spinal cord injury and other physical disabilities to assist them to achieve their goals. Working together with our customers, we assist in the elimination of barriers that prevent social inclusion for people with a spinal cord injury and other physical disabilities, ensuring that the society in which we live is accessible in every way.

The Advocacy Northern Rivers Services team is at the forefront of advocating for the rights of people with disabilities at the individual level.  We provide individual advocacy to people with disability experiencing any issues related to services and supports across the NDIS, health, housing, employment, transport, education et cetera.

In this role you will:

  • Develop and maintain networks with Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander community organisations, community groups, elders and businesses.
  • Promote and explain the work of SCIA Advocacy Services in the Northern Rivers area
  • Provide information and advice on the NDIS
  • Provide individual advocacy support, developing and implementing an individual plan in partnership with the applicant
  • Provide education and skills development, such as self-advocacy support for individuals and self-advocacy group sessions
  • Ensure the philosophy, mission and goals of empowerment are maintained or enhanced
  • Provide assistance to individuals in navigating NDIS internal reviews
  • Work with individuals in partnership with other SCIA staff and community agencies to get needs addressed. This may include access to education facilities, housing needs, workplace issues, Centrelink and NDIS issues.
  • Complete all reporting necessary for consumer service records and ensure mandatory data entry is up-to-date into government data exchange to meet regulatory and contractual requirements. 

To succeed in the role you will have experience and skills in the following areas:

  • Demonstrated experience working with Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples community groups and the ability to communicate sensitively with its members.
  • Strong interpersonal and verbal and written communication skills
  • An understanding or an ability to acquire an understanding about the impact of living with a disability.
  • Ability to work independently and collaboratively with a variety of stakeholders.
  • Demonstrated experience and skill in advocacy process and practice
  • A comprehensive understanding of the Disability sector and awareness of associated issues and barriers faced by individuals living with disability
  • Computer literate with demonstrated database usage skills
  • Have a current and unrestricted drivers licence
