ORGANISATION DESCRIPTION

Vixen is Victoria’s peer-only sex worker organisation, and member of Scarlet Alliance, Australian Sex Workers Association. Vixen promotes the cultural, legal, human, occupational and civil rights of all sex workers, and have been leading the Victorian campaign for the full decriminalisation of sex work for many years.

Scarlet Alliance, Australian Sex Workers Association, the peak national body representing sex workers and sex worker organisations in Australia will auspice Vixen and support Vixen’s transition to operate as an autonomous sex worker organisation.

Reporting directly to the Vixen Coordinator, the Vixen Peer Educator & Outreach Worker is responsible for providing peer-education, support, advocacy and referral services to sex workers primarily through outreach whilst maintaining the Organisation’s core values.

  • Provide holistic support, information, and peer education about safer sex practices within a health promotion framework.
  • Provide peer education, support, information, training, advocacy, and referral services to sex workers on issues that affect them including but not limited to: health, migration, legal, taxation, finance, employment, sexuality and identity, rights, and safer injecting.
  • Develop community engagement and development strategies to empower sex workers to represent their issues, be involved and provide their input into Vixen.
  • Develop and implement a multi-pronged outreach program that reflects the specific needs of sex workers in Victoria including maintaining regular contact through outreach.

POSITION LOCATION

The position will be based at the Vixen office in Brunswick with regular outreach to sex workers. This position will be required to work outside of standard business hours consistent with responsibilities. Some inter/ intrastate travel may be required.

SALARY & CONDITIONS OF APPOINTMENT

This part-time position is offered for a 1-year contract to start and is subject to ongoing funding or organisational change.

This is a part-time position 0.4 FTE (15 hours/ week) paid at the Social, Community, Home Care and Disability Services Industry Award 2010 Social and Community Services Employee Level 4, ($39.26 per hour, 0.4 pro rata of $77,577.76 per annum) and subject to the National Employment Standards.

TRAINING/ORIENTATION

The start up phase for this position includes a comprehensive orientation and opportunities for training.

KEY SELECTION CRITERIA (Qualifications, Experience, Skills and Abilities)

Essential:

  1. Sex work experience and demonstrated understanding of the principles of human rights and sex worker rights.
  2. Demonstrated understanding and knowledge of the current issues related to the diversity of sex worker populations in Victoria, and a high level understanding of the current issues for sex workers in Victoria.
  3. Demonstrated knowledge of relevant theory and practice as it relates to health promotion approaches and HIV prevention for sex workers, including community development, peer education, enabling environments, and harm reduction.
  4. Computer skills including file management, internet and email.
  5. Effective oral and written communication skills; organisational, time-management and reporting skills; and the ability to work both with minimal supervision and as part of a team.
  6. Demonstrated cross-cultural skills and knowledge and demonstrated knowledge of culturally appropriate work practices.
  7. A desire, willingness and ability to work with other sex workers, people from culturally and linguistically diverse backgrounds, people who inject drugs, trans and gender diverse people, and people living with HIV.
  8. Current drivers licence.

Desirable (not essential):

  1. Experience working or volunteering in community organisations in Australia or elsewhere.
  2. Experience using Google Workspace (Gmail, Drive, Calendar etc)
