Specialist Counsellor - 1800RESPECT Melbourne

Save The Children

Save the Children Australia will be working collaboratively with DV Connect, Telstra Health and Marninwarntikura Women's Resource Centre to deliver the federally-funded 1800RESPECT program in Victoria, South Australia and the NT as of July 2022. We're looking for passionate, dedicated telephone counsellors who will share our values of trauma-informed, child-centred domestic and family violence practice.

Save the Children is no ordinary not-for-profit.

We're ambitious, creative and outspoken. We stand up for women's and children's rights. We want all children to be educated, healthy and live a life free from violence. We run programs in Australia and overseas and, if there's a disaster - like an earthquake, drought or conflict - we are there on the ground.

Where you come in:

In these maximum term positions (through to June 2024) based in our head office in Carlton, you'll work as part of the 24/7 national 1800RESPECT telephone counselling service, providing highly specialised trauma counselling services to those whose lives have been impacted by domestic and family, sexual assault, and/or workplace sexual harassment. With the flexibility to work from home for most of the week if preferred, you'll report to a Team Leader.

Hours for these roles are flexible - we are open to both full time and part time (0.5FTE minimum). Hours are negotiated across a 24/7 roster, based on the rostering requirements of staff, your preferences, and the preferences of other Counsellors. We're currently in most need of Counsellors who are available on Fridays and Saturdays as part of their fortnightly roster.

You will make an impact by:

  • Providing single session specialist therapeutic counselling support, psycho education, referrals, and support for callers with complex needs
  • Establishing caller safety, building rapport and identifying best pathways for support
  • Working within a new national framework based on knowledge of best practice principles
  • At times, supporting the First Responder teams by answering calls and chats as required and providing information, referral and other support
