Where you come in:

In this full-time, fixed term position (until 30 June 2020, with potential for extension) based in Darwin, you'll work with families where a child up to the age of 18 has been identified as experiencing or being at very high risk of experiencing neglect. You'll provide support and skills development for families whose children are at risk of, or have had contact with, the child protection system, with the aim of avoiding statutory intervention. You'll be part of our NT Programs team and report to the Team Leader of our Family Support Work programs.

You will make an impact by:

  • Providing group and individual support to families from a child centred approach
  • Building strong, lasting connections with people from diverse cultural and economic backgrounds
  • Supporting families to access the assistance they need, when they need it
  • Actively encouraging vulnerable, detached or fearful families to engage with our programs
  • Establishing relationships with the local community to mobilise and build capacity

… You're an enthusiastic family support worker with demonstrated experience in working alongside families from diverse backgrounds, using a partnership, strengths-based and family-centred approach. Your highly developed cultural awareness and sensitivity, partnered with excellent communication skills, will enable you to build community networks and lasting relationships. You're not afraid of a challenge and constantly seek to grow and develop.

This role requires:

  • Previous experience as a community development practitioner working with high-risk families, including exposure to domestic and family violence
  • Highly developed communication and interpersonal skills, including the ability to negotiate and advocate on behalf of families
  • Strong record keeping and case noting skills
  • A current valid driver's licence
  • Qualification in a relevant field such as Psychology, Social Work, Human Services or Social Science would be desirable
