Intake and Assessment Worker - Murrumbidgee

Save The Children

No day is the same in Save the Children Australia'sMurrumbidgee Family Connect and Support Program, which provides community-based information and referral advice for families with children aged 0-18 years. We are looking for an experienced Intake and Assessment Worker to join our FCS team in Wagga Wagga or Griffith. This integral role will build and develop awareness of the FCS across the region, provide a warm and welcoming public face for the FCS, and support the team to identify and assess the presenting level of need and make referrals to appropriate service providers. Your superb networking skills will help to build strong referral pathways for families who find it challenging to navigate the service system.

Save the Children is no ordinary not-for-profit.

We're ambitious, creative and outspoken. We stand up for children's rights. We want all children to be educated, healthy and live a life free from violence. Save the Children has been creating better lives for children in New South Wales since we opened our first pre-school in 1962. See here for more information on our work across New South Wales.

Where you come in:

In this part time, fixed term position (19 hours per week through to end December 2023), based in Wagga Wagga or Griffith (with the option to work from home), you will work with referrers to gather and assess information and identify appropriate referral pathways to ensure families receive the support they need at the time they need it. You will report to the Team Leader and work closely with several Family Support Workers and rotational opportunities may be available across these roles.

You will make an impact by:

  • Supporting the team to receive and act upon referrals to the program in a timely way
  • Using culturally appropriate and strengths-based approaches to support families
  • Actively encouraging vulnerable, detached, or fearful families to engage with our programs
  • Actively seeking opportunities to provide support and advice
  • Actively promoting the service to our referral partners

Does this sound like you?

You are truly passionate about standing up for children. Your experience in similar roles, 'toolkit' of strategies and ability to think on your feet will see you find solutions to complex situations. Your exceptional cultural knowledge will help you build strong connections with people from a variety of cultural and socio-economic backgrounds. You consider yourself as a 'referral structural engineer' not someone who just builds referral pathways. You have empathy, a 'can-do attitude' and most importantly, an infectious enthusiasm for your job. You are not afraid of a challenge and constantly seek to grow and develop.

This role requires:

  • Proven intake and assessment skills and an excellent understanding of challenges which may be facing families in the Murrumbidgee region
  • A highly developed understanding of working with Aboriginal children and families, especially as it relates to culture and tradition on Wiradjuri lands
  • Proven engagement skills with a variety of stakeholders, both internal and external
  • Exceptional time management, assertive outreach, verbal and non-verbal communication and problem-solving skills
  • A current valid driver's licence
  • Diploma or degree in social work, community services, or related discipline is desirable

Working at Save the Children is more than just a job.

It's the feeling of knowing that your work is contributing to making the world a better place for children and working with others who feel the same. In addition to a connection to social causes, you will have access to:

  • Award rate salary plus full salary packaging benefits
  • Professional supervision training and monthly supervision sessions
  • Friendly and flexible work environment, including working from home
  • Learning and development opportunities
  • Child friendly work environment
