Head of Media

Save The Children

Save the Children Australia has a high media profile. We intend to keep it that way. Because the higher our profile, the stronger our voice for vulnerable children. Join Australia's busiest, most effective not-for-profit media team. We need you to engage journalists across print, broadcast, online and social media to drive interest in Save the Children's work at home and overseas. You will help position us as the authoritative voice on children's rights, and a leading agency in humanitarian emergencies. You have a nose for news, thrive on pressure, and have the drive to make a difference for children.

Save the Children is no ordinary not-for-profit.

We're ambitious, creative and outspoken. We stand up for children's rights. We want all children to be educated, healthy and live a life free from violence. We run programs in Australia and overseas and, if there's a disaster - like an earthquake, drought or conflict - we are there on the ground.

Where you come in:

In this full-time position, based in Melbourne*, you will lead the media team and provide advice direct to the Executive and our growing portfolio of social enterprises on media issues. You will be a key member of our Policy & Advocacy Department and report to our Head of Campaigns & Public Affairs.

  • Matching our media strategy with the organisations ambition and advocacy goals
  • Rapidly responding to emergencies here in Australia and overseas
  • Building strong relationships with editors, journalists and producers
  • Supporting our programs and social enterprises on media engagement

Does this sound like you…

…You are highly motivated and solutions focused. You are excellent in high-pressure, fast-moving and sometimes ambiguous situations. You love nothing more than to bounce ideas around with a supportive team. You have an eye for a good yarn and how to sell it. You are eager to try new things to get results because you too want to make a difference for children.

This role requires:

  • A relevant qualification, such as degree in journalism, communications or equivalent lived experience
  • Substantial experience in a relevant field or industry
  • Ability to travel, including to some tough humanitarian contexts
  • Willingness to be on-call every third weekend
