Family Support Worker - Mooroopna

Save the Children Australia has operated a Kindergarten in Mooroopna since 1969. The Kindergarten is not a mainstream service - it is free for families and caters to families with one or more attributes we regard as creating vulnerability in families and their children. We need you, as a Family Support Worker, to build rapport with children and families to identify and support their needs. This is your chance to help children reach their potential. No day is the same in this 'kindergarten' environment, but every day provides new opportunities to help children smile.

Where you come in:

In this part-time fixed-term position (30.4 hours a week over 5 days through to end of December 2021), you will collaborate with Kindergarten Educators, Koorie Engagement Support Workers, and Team Leader to provide practical support and information, supported referrals to other services as required and where appropriate one-on-one interventions. You will strengthen links to the community and develop confidence in the support network we are proud to deliver. You will be based in Mooroopna or Shepparton and report to our Team Leader, Early Childhood Education.

You will make an impact by:

  • Providing group and individual support to families from a child centred approach
  • Building strong, lasting connections with Aboriginal and culturally diverse families
  • Supporting families to access the assistance they need, when they need it
  • Actively encouraging vulnerable, detached or fearful families to engage with our programs
  • Engaging in reflective practice through a trauma informed and strength-based lens
  • Collecting and recording data and information for accountability, evaluation, and reporting

Your experience in case management roles, 'toolkit' of strategies and ability to think on your feet will see you find solutions to complex situations. Your exceptional cultural knowledge will help you build strong connections with people from a variety of cultural and socio-economic backgrounds. You have empathy, a 'can-do attitude' and most importantly, an infectious enthusiasm for your job.

This role requires:

  • Bachelor's degree in Social Work or similar, or extensive experience in a closely related role
  • Knowledge and understanding of the range of family risk and protective factors which impact on child educational outcomes
  • Experience working with families from an Aboriginal and culturally diverse background
  • Demonstrated experience supporting vulnerable or at-risk children and families
  • Exceptional communications skills and the ability to build lasting connections
  • Demonstrated knowledge of effective parenting and behaviour management techniques
  • Driver's licence (car available for work use)
