Family Support Worker - Family and Child Connect - Mount Isa

No two days are the same in Save the Children Australia'sFamily and Child Connect Program (FaCC), a community-based support, information and referral service for families with children under the age of 18 years. We need you to develop awareness of the FaCC program across the region and assess the level of need of vulnerable families to determine referrals to appropriate service providers.

Where you come in:

In this full-time, fixed term position (to end of December 2021, with strong potential for extension), based in Mount Isa, you'll work with families and external service providers to connect families to the right service at the right time. You'll be the public face of the FaCC service, which aims to quickly build rapport with families, assess their needs, and provide support with referrals and/or short-term assistance to help them get back on track. You'll have coaching and mentoring responsibility over an assistant FaCC worker and will report to the Team Leader.

You will make an impact by:

  • Working with families to identify issues impacting on children's safety and family wellbeing, establishing clear goals and assisting families to achieve these
  • Travelling to rural and remote communities in the region to promote the FaCC service and work directly with families
  • Using culturally appropriate and strengths-based approaches to support families
  • Actively encouraging vulnerable, detached or fearful families to engage with our programs
  • Promoting the FaCC in the community, building and maintaining meaningful working relationships with clients and relevant stakeholders

Does this sound like you?

You're truly passionate about standing up for children. Your experience in intake and assessment and ability to think on your feet will see you find solutions to complex situations. Your cultural knowledge will help you build strong connections with people from a variety of cultural and socio-economic backgrounds, and will help to build strong referral pathways for families who find it challenging to navigate the service system.

This role requires:

  • Experience working alongside children and families, using a partnership, strengths-based and family-centred approach in a community development setting
  • Willingness to travel in the region (combination of flying and driving)
  • Experience developing referral pathways with service providers
  • Experience working with in Aboriginal communities with high-risk families and complex scenarios
  • Qualification in Community Services or related discipline is desirable
  • Current valid driver's licence
