About the role

An leading hand is sought for NCEC's Parks and Maintenance crew for a new contract maintaining gardens of unit blocks in inner city.

NCEC is a workers co-operative and social enterprise maintaining a number of properties in Brisbane's Inner North. The primary purpose of NCEC is to create meaningful employment opportunities for people facing barriers to employment but we achieve this by running a profitable and effective business. 

The ideal candidate will have extensive experience in Gardening and/or Landscaping, experience or aptitude for small business, a commitment to Co-operative principles and be welcoming of colleagues who may have a disability.

The leading hand will be responsible for maintaining contract requirements and leading a small team of workers under guidance of senior manager.

Benefits and perks 

The position is casual for 3 days or 22.8 hours per week with potential to extend hours. Preferred hours are 7 a.m.- 2.30 p.m.. but negotiation is possible. Work will initially be available for 6 months, but pending candidate suitability and status of contracts, permanent work may be available. 

Remuneration and conditions are according to the Gardening and Landscaping Award 2010 commensurate with experience and including leading hand and other relevant loadings. Generous salary packaging benefits are also available.

Skills and experience

Selection Criteria

  1. Expertise in park and garden maintenance activities e.g. grass cutting, hedge trimming and pruning and maintenance of indoor plants.
  2. Ability to plan and prioritise and report on work as set out in works contract
  3. Ability to organise self and work team.
  4. Ability to work as part of a team and take supervision and direction from Parks Manager and Coordinator of N.C.E.C.
  5. A commitment to creating a work environment inclusive of diversity.
  6. Ability to relate to and communicate with others in a clear, effective, warm and genuine manner.
  7. A demonstrated ability to innovate and plan for the future.
  8. A demonstrated ability and expertise in ensuring compliance with health and safety systems.
  9. Oversee equipment maintenance.
  10. Small Business/Entrepreneurial capacity and experience (advantageous).
  11. Horticultural / Landscaping certificate (advantageous).
  12. Own utility vehicle (advantageous).
  13. Liaison with customers.
  14. Have a current Driver's Licence.
  15. Have a current Blue Card / National Police Check.
  16. Have or be willing to apply for ACDC Chemical Application Certificate and First Aid Certificate.
  17. Experience driving tractor / ride on machinery (advantageous)
  18. Experience with hedging
