About the role

Would you like to gain experience in animal care in a complex and fast paced environment. Our Burwood and Pearcedale Animal Welfare Facilities are looking for casuals who can support our permanent staff to deliver high quality care to the animals in our shelter. This is an extremely busy shelter and we support our staff with high quality training in cleaning and feeding processes, animal handling and enrichment. RSPCA has multiple sites in Victoria which allows staff to take advantage of opportunities which may become available in other sites, shelters to contribute to the achievement of the best possible welfare outcome for every animal in our care.

This diverse and interesting role will challenge and reward you by providing you with the following responsibilities and duties:

  • Contribute to the daily management of the Barn animals (including livestock, horses, small animals and poultry), and livestock and poultry in quarantine/adoption, in a professional and caring manner.
  • Observe, document and report health and behaviour concerns of all animals in our care, support Veterinarians when required and medicate barn and shelter animals.
  • Ensure horses and livestock and small animals are being fed as per relevant feeding protocols;
  • Provide basic equine first aid/follow-up care as needed;
  • Attend vet and farrier appointments and handling related concerns as needed;
  • Provide supervision, guidance and support to volunteers, ensuring that they following operational and safety procedures at all times.
  • Provide a high level of service to customers in the adoption, surrender and reclaiming of livestock and poultry to enhance the reputation of RSPCA Victoria within the local community;
  • Ensure all necessary documentation relating to the management of education and shelter animals are recorded accurately and in accordance with RSPCA Victoria and Animal Ethics Committee procedures and timeframes, including medical and behavioural records;
  • Contribute to a positive and inclusive work environment by effectively communicating and working collaboratively with peers across all departments, and consistently behaving in accordance with the RSPCA Victoria values and associated policies;
  • Takes reasonable care for the safety of oneself and others, whilst contributing to safe work practices at RSPCA Victoria by knowing and complying with all WH&S policies and procedures.

Skills and Experience

  • Strong background knowledge in equine health, husbandry and wellness, is highly desirable.
  • Previous experience in livestock and/or a small animal care role is highly desirable, including basic knowledge of animal anatomy, behaviour, disease recognition and safe handling;
  • Good knowledge of horse anatomy, behaviour, safe handling and s basic disease recognition (such as colic, laminitis, etc);
  • Ability to work in a fast paced and challenging work environment, whilst showing great care and compassion to the animals in our education and shelter areas;
  • Demonstrated experience working collaboratively in a team environment and communicating effectively with customers and colleagues;
  • The ability to work rotating rosters including weekends and public holidays;
  • Practical skills in caring for horses would be highly desirable, including:
    • Picking up feet;
    • Identifying correct medications;
    • Dressing wounds (First Aid);
    • Leading/Haltering;
    • Interpretating vet notes and documenting observations.
