Senior Communications Officer - Flexible Location

RSPCA Australia
  • Work with one of Australia’s best known and most loved charities
  • Use your communication skills to improve the lives of Australia’s animals
  • Great team, diverse work, flexible conditions (including possibility to WFH)

The RSPCA is Australia’s best known and most trusted animal welfare organisation, and RSPCA Australia is looking for a Senior Communications Officer to join their team.

This is a rare opportunity to join the nationally-focused Communications and Campaigns team based in Canberra. However, for exceptional candidates, we’ll consider different locations as long as you have a good internet connection and a safe and productive home office environment.

This is a full-time role, offered initially under contract until 30 June 2021, with the option for extension.

You’ll work on a wide variety of issues, and across all our communications channels including strategy, social media, e-communications, news media, corporate publications, major events and partnerships.

Our ideal candidate will be a highly skilled writer who is competent and confident in dealing with the media from an in-house communication position. We’re looking for someone who is able to competently manage a community of valued supporters, contribute to communications at the strategic level, and develop and implement effective campaigns to achieve positive change.

Reporting to the Communications and Campaigns Lead, the Senior Communications Officer will work in a team environment to help ensure our community knows, understands and supports our policies, views and activities, by communicating through a variety of channels.

Position Description

  1. Perform a leading role in managing the RSPCA’s communities across multiple digital platforms including social media, e-communications (such as the monthly e-newsletter and regular eDMs), websites and blogs.
  2. This includes leading the social media strategy and calendar, generating content and managing responses in order to continuously build audiences, and producing content that leverages new technologies (from video to augmented reality, for example) to reach and better engage new and existing online and offline audiences, ensuring a steady flow of accurate and engaging content as appropriate to each channel.
  3. Writing and/or editing content generated by the RSPCA Australia team for a wide variety of purposes, including the RSPCA’s own publications and corporate communication materials as well as web content, media releases, news articles, talking points, Knowledgebase articles and scripts, for example – providing quality assurance and ensuring consistency across all communications.
  4. Managing the communications contribution to national marketing, fundraising and partnership activities (including content for workplace giving and regular givers newsletters as well as website and social media strategy and scheduling).
  5. Managing proactive and reactive media (including daily media monitoring and managing the media phone and mailbox) to maintain positive media relationships, leverage opportunities, and ensure the RSPCA’s voice is heard on key issues accurately and consistently.
  6. Leading internal communications within the RSPCA Australia office as well as among state and territory member Societies, managing relationships and ensuring frequent and regular communication between communications personnel, and including preparing and issuing the Connections newsletter.
  7. Leading the development, implementation and (some) evaluation of strategies to promote the RSPCA national events, including Clear the Shelters, Million Paws Walk, RSPCA Cupcake Day and the Animal Welfare Science Seminar.
  8. Responding to day-to-day requests for information from the general public as needed.
  9. As required, contributing to the day-to-day operation of the Communications and Campaigns team and the RSPCA Australia office.
  10. Other duties as reasonably directed.
