Who Are We

Living Languages supports the sustainability of Indigenous languages and Indigenous peoples’ ownership of their language documentation and revitalisation. We are responsive to community need, and travel around Australia, from our Victorian base, to provide training, advocacy, networking and professional development.

We are a passionate team in a dynamic workplace: we value open, collaborative relationships, both with the Indigenous language practitioners we support, as well as within our own team. We aim to support self-determination in the design and delivery of all our programs. Our team is partly located in our Melbourne office and partly remote.

About the Role

Living Languages is seeking a 0.7 FTE Program Director for a contract of up to 12 months (July 2020 - June 2021) with scope to extend, pending funding. You will provide strategic direction and leadership for the organisation, managing both the training team and Operations Manager. This role supersedes our current CEO role as part of a new organisational structure. This role will be based in our Carlton (Vic) office. Duties

  • Direct Living Languages’ training programs and projects
  • Lead the development and implementation of the organisation’s strategic and operational plans
  • Lead the preparation of funding applications and reports
  • Lead the strategic development and implementation of new training programs and projects, including consultation with Aboriginal communities and organisations and other stakeholders
  • Oversee delivery of training programs
  • Liaise, and develop strategic relationships, with funding bodies and other stakeholders
  • Liaise with partner Registered Training Organisation (RTO)
  • Oversee advocacy and outreach activities
  • Oversee Operations Manager, to produce, monitor and approve budgets and expenditure
  • Attend and report to board meetings
  • Liaise with the Operations Manager to develop opportunities for diversified income streams, for example fee-for-service where appropriate

Essential skills & experience:

  • Familiarity and experience working with Aboriginal organisations or communities
  • Proven track-record in managing and mentoring people and teams
  • Ability to bring a flexible approach to working in a dynamic team environment, particularly managing staff remotely
  • High-level project management skills, including design, implementation, monitoring and reporting, managing multiple projects at once
  • Stakeholder engagement and consultation, public relations
  • Excellent written and oral communication skills for a variety of audiences (ie cross-cultural communication, formal reports, Plain English, meeting facilitation, etc)

Desirable skills:

  • Education administration/management, particularly VET sector
  • Training/teaching experience
  • Budgets/finance management
  • Experience producing educational/instructional material
  • Grant application writing
  • Advocacy/outreach experience
  • NFP experience
  • Familiarity and experience with languages, linguistics and/or second-language learning & teaching
