First Nations Practical Legal Training Position (Voluntary)

Redfern Legal Centre (RLC) works to provide access to justice to First Nations clients living in Redfern, Waterloo and surrounding inner city suburbs. Our First Nations Solicitor:

  • provides advice and representation to First Nations clients on a range of civil matters, including credit and debt, discrimination, housing, apprehended violence orders and child protection;
  • conducts policy and systemic law reform work on issues of importance to First Nations communities; and
  • delivers community legal education.

RLC seeks an enthusiastic First Nations PLT student to volunteer 2 days per week to work with our First Nations Solicitor. The role can be a combination of remote and onsite work. Training and initial supervision will be provided in person. Training and initial supervision will be provided in person.

Responsibilities include research, legal drafting, interviewing clients, attending outreach clinics and assisting with the advice, casework and projects of the practice.

Vaccination: It is a requirement of volunteers at Redfern Legal Centre to be fully vaccinated for Covid-19.

This is an Aboriginal/Torres Strait Islander identified position. Redfern Legal Centre considers that being Aboriginal or Torres Strait Islander is a genuine occupational requirement under s 14 of the Anti-Discrimination Act 1977 (NSW). Selection Criteria:

  1. Completion of law degree and eligibility to commence Practical Legal Training.
  2. Availability 2 days per week. Please specify your availability, start date and preferred length of commitment in your application (e.g. Tuesdays and Thursdays starting on 11 June, 75 days in total).
  3. Knowledge of legal and social justice issues affecting First Nations peoples.
  4. Demonstrated ability to work with people experiencing vulnerability and with First Nations clients.
  5. Be of Aboriginal and/or Torres Strait Islander descent and identify and be accepted as such in the community.
