Right Now Inc

About Right Now

Now in its fourteenth year, Right Now has published a vast range of established and emerging writers, poets, human rights activists, lawyers, academics and artists, with a particular commitment to elevating diverse voices and perspectives. We seek to consistently emphasise the importance of human rights, both by highlighting stories that are relevant to readers’ daily lives and uncovering the ways in which human rights are being compromised in Australia and around the world. Our work begins with the belief that creating a positive, rights-respecting culture in Australia begins with the flow of information.

About the role

Right Now is seeking a committed and experienced finance or accounting professional to join our Board of Directors as Treasurer in a voluntary position.

Right Now is an independent not-for-profit media organisation focused on human rights issues in Australia. Our work begins with the belief that creating a positive, rights-respecting culture in Australia begins with the flow of information. Our vision is an Australia where people have informed and inspired discussions about human rights, equality and justice.

The Treasurer is responsible for financial administration and reporting, and for advising the Board on financial strategy and risk. As a member of the Board, the Treasurer will also be expected to contribute to the broader strategic direction and oversight of Right Now.

The Right Now Board meets on the evening of the first Tuesday of every month. Outside of Board meeting participation, it is expected that the Treasurer will need to commit two hours per week to supporting Right Now.

We are looking for someone with:

  • Skills and interest in financial management or organisational administration.
  • A strong interest in human rights and social justice.
  • A supportive and collaborative mindset.
  • Capacity to undertake eight hours of work per month to support the work of the organisation.

Treasurer responsibilities

  • Advising the board on financial strategy
  • Financial and budget management, including preparing and managing the annual budget for Board review and preparing monthly financial statements
  • Bookkeeping and day to day expense management (noting that in most months we have less than five invoices to process)
  • Banking, including ensuring our banking processes are optimal and meeting the needs of the organisation
  • Maintain and enforce strong internal controls and financial management policies
  • Attending monthly board meetings and contributing to organisational strategy
  • Preparing our annual financial report

Right Now is stronger when our team has a diversity of backgrounds and experience, including lived experience. Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples, people of colour, people from culturally and linguistically diverse and refugee backgrounds, people with diverse religious beliefs, women, LGBTIQ+ people and people with disability are strongly encouraged to apply.
