Reverse Garbage is currently seeking a responsible and reliable truck driver to join our team. This is a permanent part time position 3 days/wk. Reverse Garbage is a non-profit re-use centre located in Woolloongabba, Brisbane. We collect high quality industrial discards from a wide range of industries around Brisbane, diverting them from landfill to make them available at low cost to the community through our warehouse at 20 Burke Street.

The position consists of three days driving around the greater Brisbane region to collect a range of materials from our broad range of suppliers, liaising with the shop floor and sorting co-ordinators, organising the truck run, making contact with suppliers and manually loading and unloading the truck. Applicants will also be required to work one Saturday/month on a rotating roster in sorting or on sales as well as participate in other work of the co-operative.

Selection Criteria:

Essential skills/experience:

  • Ability to drive a light truck (3.2 tonne gum) in a safe and responsible manner

  • Current manual car drivers license and clean record for 5 years

  • Excellent interpersonal, verbal communication and listening skills and an ability to interact with a diverse range of people from varied industries

  • Ability to evaluate a diverse range of industrial materials and make quick and sound decisions regarding their value and re-use potential

  • A strong understanding of issues surrounding waste, resource use and sustainability

  • A strong commitment to environmental protection

  • Basic vehicle maintenance skills

  • Understanding of safe materials handling procedures

  • Ability to manually load and unload items

  • Decision making, problem solving and time management skills

  • Computer literacy skills

Desirable skills/experience:

  • Business management skills

  • An understanding of the philosophy and practice of consensus decision making

  • Previous work in a community based organisation

Reverse Garbage is a worker-run co-operative. The successful applicant will be expected to apply to become a member/director after six months. We are seeking a person who is willing to make a long-term commitment to Reverse Garbage.

Remuneration: This is a permanent part time position. The wage is $17.95/hr and is based on the general retail industry award. This increases once the successful applicant becomes a director.
