Reverse Garbage Queensland is currently seeking an experienced, well organised person to join our team in the position of Finance Co-ordinator. We are seeking someone who is keen to make a positive contribution to a not-for-profit organisation and passionate about issues surrounding sustainability, the environment and waste reduction. This is a permanent part-time position, three days per week.

Reverse Garbage Queensland is a non-profit re-use centre located in Woolloongabba, Brisbane. We collect high quality industrial discards from a wide range of industries around Brisbane, diverting them from landfill to make them available at low cost to the community through our warehouse at 20 Burke Street.

The position will initially consist of two days per week of financial administration duties and one day per week involved in other duties in our retail warehouse business, such as sorting donated materials or working on the sales counter. It is anticipated that once familiar with our financial systems and the position, the successful applicant will spend only one to one and a half days on finance per week. There will be an extensive period of training over the first few months of the position also.

Applicants will also be required to work an additional day in our warehouse one Saturday approximately every four weeks on a rotating roster in sorting or sales, as well as participate in other work of the co-operative.

Selection Criteria:

Essential skills/experience:

  • A high level of mathematical competency;
  • A methodical and systematic approach to their work
  • A high level of competency working with spreadsheets and computer operation generally – eg. file management, office productivity software, email management, web based applications and platforms.
  • Excellent verbal and written communications skills
  • Excellent time management skills
  • Basic material handling skills and a willingness to get one's hands dirty
  • Ability to self direct and work effectively both independently and as part of a team
  • A strong commitment to environmental protection

Desirable skills/experience:

  • Business financial management experience including accounting and bookkeeping knowledge
  • Experience with business accounting software, eg. MYOB, Xero
  • Ability to produce and interpret financial reports and budgets
  • Knowledge of digital sales management systems and business software
  • Work in a community based organisation
  • An understanding of meeting processes
  • Understanding of the philosophy and practice of consensus based decision making
  • Ability to assist with strategic planning

Reverse Garbage Queensland is a worker-run co-operative and applicants with an interest in becoming a member/director of the co-op in the long term will be favourably regarded.

Remuneration: This is a permanent part time position. The wage is $21.41 per hour and is based on the General Retail Industry award. Normal award penalty rates apply for Saturday work.
