The Aboriginal and Islander Engagement Worker works in the context of the Disability Royal Commission Counselling and Support (DRCCS) program. The main client groups of this program are:

  • People with disability;
  • Their families, carers and friends;
  • People working within disability services;
  • Any others who might be affected by the Disability Royal Commission.

The Aboriginal and Islander Engagement Worker will build strong relationships with stakeholders, communities, and clients relevant to the program. They work closely with other DRCCS staff and other Aboriginal staff within the organisation. They work in a trauma-informed way with clients, understanding the impact trauma can have, and how to provide support in a way that makes people feel safe.

Essential

  • Experience in and demonstrated ability to professionally support clients, especially with disability people or their families and carers
  • Demonstrated capacity to engage and build positive connections to Aboriginal & Torres Strait Islander communities, organisations and individuals to deliver community education, networking and service promotion
  • Ability to work independently and as part of a team
  • Good written and verbal communication skills, reasonable computer skills in Microsoft Office Suite and ability to work with a data base
  • Capacity and flexibility to travel to regional, rural and remote localities as and when required.
  • NT Driver’s License
  • Good knowledge of local Aboriginal and Islander culture

Desirable

  • Possession of or significant progress towards the completion of qualifications (VET or tertiary) in community services, disability services, social work or other related fields.
  • Understanding of trauma-informed client support

In the performance of this role, you are required to comply with the Safeguarding Children and Young People Practice and Behaviour Guidelines and to participate in cultural fitness activities.
