Queensland South Native Title Services (QSNTS) is seeking an experienced Research Officer to join QSNTS’s Operations Division based in our Brisbane CBD office.

About Us

QSNTS is a native title service provider funded by the Australian Government to assist Traditional Owners in the pursuit of their native title aspirations by providing a comprehensive range of services under the Native Title Act 1993 (Cth) (NTA).

About the Role

In this position, and as a member of interdisciplinary Client Management Teams, you will undertake a range of research activities contributing to QSNTS’s provision of service to Traditional Owners in the claim and post-determination phases of their native title journey.

In the role of Research Officer your key responsibilities will include:

1. Delivering and/or assisting with the delivery of research activities, including the undertaking of genealogical, anthropological, archaeological and historical research, to support Traditional Owners in pursuing and implementing their native title rights and interests.

a) Liaising with Traditional Owners and expert consultants in the coordination of research projects and associated research and other field trips;

b) Undertaking, and comprehensively reporting upon, desktop and field research to support the achievement of sustainable outcomes for Traditional Owners; and

c) Contributing to the development of targeted terms of reference for consultancy contracts and monitoring compliance against the performance of contracts.

2. As a member of interdisciplinary teams, engage in and promote Whole of Client/Whole of Organisation service delivery in pursuit of QSNTS’s Strategic Plan’s objectives, by:

a) Contributing to the development and implementation of Client Management Plans for matters to which you are allocated;

b) Assisting with the development and implementation of strategies, policies and procedures directed at innovative and improved service delivery; and

c) Sharing relevant information and facilitating collaboration with QSNTS colleagues.

3. Assisting with the provision of geospatial services and advice.

4. Managing records and correspondence in accordance with QSNTS information management standards and record management system requirements.

About you

The successful applicant will possess the following qualifications and professional experience:

  1. Demonstrated Collaborative, Accountable, Courageous, Flexible and Resilient ways of working as per the Foundation proficiency level of the QSNTS Behavioural capability framework (included in the attached Position Description).

  2. Ability to undertake the research role and deliver associated services per the proficiency level indicated in the relevant QSNTS technical capability framework(s) (included in the attached Position Description).

  3. Knowledge of current Indigenous issues in contemporary society and a commitment to the principles of advocacy and self-determination for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander People.

  4. Able and willing to undertake regular travel throughout Queensland.

  5. A current open driver’s licence.

  6. A Degree in anthropology, history, Indigenous studies, or a related field would be advantageous.
