LawRight provides access to justice for vulnerable people by coordinating the pro bono resources of legal professions. LawRight’s Court & Tribunal Service in the Queensland District and Supreme Courts and Court of Appeal, Federal Court and Federal Circuit Court of Australia, and the Queensland Civil and Administrative Tribunal (QCAT) coordinates pro bono resources to provide unbundled legal assistance, pro bono referrals and mediations for parties, together with representation in selected matters.

We seek a lawyer to support the operation of the State Courts office.

Duties include:

  • Maintain service processes, databases and resources;
  • Manage client intake;
  • Undertake direct legal casework including the provision of direct legal advice or discrete task assistance to clients in the jurisdictions of the above offices;
  • Prepare briefs for volunteer lawyers and barristers of the services listed above;
  • Contribute to research and policy development; and
  • Participate in the general activities of LawRight.

Experience/skills:

  • High level legal research skills and oral and written communication skill;
  • Knowledge of the relevant rules and procedures or the ability to rapidly acquire such knowledge in the jurisdictions of the District and Supreme Court and Magistrates Court an advantage;
  • Litigation experience an advantage;
  • High level oral and written communication skills;
  • High level organisational and computer skills;
  • Flexibility and initiative suitable for working in a team environment with limited resources; and
  • Strong commitment to access to justice and compassion for marginalised and vulnerable members of society and an interest in issues confronted by self-represented litigants.

Formal Qualifications:

Admitted as a solicitor of the Supreme Court of Queensland. Entry in the Registrar of Practitioners kept in the High Court of Australia. Unrestricted practicing certificate required.

benefits:

Leave loading and six weeks annual leave pro rata plus 9.5% superannuation. Eligibility to salary sacrifice up to $35,000 (grossed up) of income to personal and entertainment expenses.

term:

Position is for 5 days per week until January 2023. Continuation beyond this date is subject to LawRight funding and resources.
